Epcot: a big new world!

So you are well rested after your adventure in the Magic Kingdom yesterday, and ready to take on Epcot, right? Let’s go!

While the Magic Kingdom is the smallest park on property, Epcot sometimes appears to be the biggest. (It’s not.) Epcot is actually divided into 2 lands, FutureWorld and World Showcase, and both will require some walking!

If you arrive at Epcot via Disney bus or monorail, you will have a relatively short walk to the entrance of the park. If you drive your vehicle, keep in mind that the paking ot is rather large. If you want to save your walking strength for the park, take one of the trams that circle the parking area. They will drop you close to the entrance.

Once you are in Epcot, don’t become overwhelmed by the size. (Save that for Animal Kingdom.) Epcot is laid out, in my opinion, very nicely and very convienently for getting to all attractions. You will start by walking past the fountains and the Leave-a-Legacy towards the park’s icon, Spaceship Earth. From there, you can choose to walk right or left, depending on which attractions you want to see. The walk around the park is beautiful.

You will be walking towards World Showcase, but the walk will be made easier because you will be stopping to see so many of the attractions along the way, as well as appreciating the beauty that is Epcot. Epcot always gives me the impression that you have stepped into a futue filled with music, sunshine, flowers, birds and fountains. I have seen the future, and it’s good! The attractions in Epcot are set a bit back from the main path, and they are large attractions! Unlike the Magic Kingdon, where you often stand in an outside queue and enter the building at the beginning of the ride, you will enter many Epcot attractions and find a whole story to go with the attraction. For example, if Soarin’ is your goal, you will enter into The Land Pavilion. Soarin is downstairs and to your left, but there are a treasure trove of other goodies to explore before you get there or while you ar waiting for your Fastpass time to come up. Spend some time in all the pavilions in FutureWorld…you’ll d up your walking steps! :)

From here, its on to World Showcase! When you enter the park via the bridge between FutureWorld and World Showcase, you will be facig World Showcase Lagoon. From here, you can walk to the left or the right. The path is a big circle around the circumference of the lagoon, passing by the countries on your way around. This can be a long walk, especially on a hot summer aftrnoon. It can also get very crowded during some of the festivals. Take time to rest. There are benches placed all around the lagoon, as well as tables near the outdoor eateries. And one of the nicest perks is the Friendship boats that run the length and breadth of the lagoon. Climb on one for a relaxing and scenic ride across the lagoon. The ships run in both directions with 2 seperate lanes of travel, so you can cut out some, or all of your walking back.

Remember that with every park adventure comes the walk back. You will get tired in Epcot, and then you will have to get back to your resort. If you stay to watch Illuminations, the night time show that is presented on World Showcase Lagoon, you will have to walk from wherever you are in World Showcase, across the bridge into Future World, and then back to your transportation option. The Friendships do not run after  Illuminations gets set up, around 7 PM, and they do not run after the show. Unlike the Magic Kingdom, your feet are your only option out of the park.

Once back at your resort, time to rest, relax and rehydrate. Our next park is small but mighty…Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Get prepared to do some walking, but alot of standing. You don’t want to miss the Streetmosphere that goes on in this wonderful park!

My Guilty Secret: Restaurantosaurus

This Foodie has a very guilty secret. I love cheeseburgers. I love all cheeseburgers, even awful Counter Service Disney cheeseburgers. Disney has made some major improvements and offered lots of specialty burgers in the last year or so. Some have already come and gone, like the Liberty Inn ham and Gouda burger. Sometimes, however, I don’t want pulled pork on my burger or to pay $17.00 for a kobe burger at Yak and Yeti. Sometimes I just want a regular old cheeseburger and fries. There are tons of places at Walt Disney World to get a regular old burger and fries: Cosmic Rays, Rosie’s All American, Pecos Bills and the list goes on and on. After all, the cheeseburger is the classic theme park meal.

I have a favorite when it comes to my Counter Service plain old cheeseburger fetish. Surprise! It’s at Animal Kingdom park and in the Dinoland area. Restaurantosaurus is my favorite place to get a cheeseburger.

There are lots of reasons that this is my favorite place in WDW to get a cheeseburger. Let’s start at the beginning: location. Animal Kingdom is my favorite park and so the day I visit there is usually the day I spend the most time touring attractions and am less inclined to sit down and spend an hour having a Table Service meal. Animal Kingdom also has the least number of sit down meal options. This makes Counter Service meals more popular. Location in the park itself also lends itself to being my meal of choice. Typically, I’m finished with Africa and Asia, at least the first round of rides, at around 11:00am. I head over to Dinoland and hop on Dinosaur. I’m usually pretty hungry once I get done with this fast paced morning. Restaurantosaurus is just opening up at this time–lunch starts at 11:30am. The line for food is minimal and my biggest pet peeve is waiting in line for food.

Theming is the next reason that I love Restaurantosaurus.  This Counter Service restaurant has a theme that is as well fleshed out as the queue for an E-Ticket ride. The restaurant is the bunkhouse for the Dino Research Institute that was cobbled together from lots of different buildings and even an old Airstream trailer. The inside of the restaurant is huge, and therefore has a ton of seating capacity, which is nice on busy days. The left side of the restaurant is themed to more of the educational research projects that the students have been working on as well as the kitchen and some bunking areas. On the right side of the restaurant you’ll find what appears to be the “living room” and the “rec room.” My favorite place to sit is actually in the Airstream trailer, which houses the jukebox. If you look inside the jukebox you’ll find the playlist for the background music playing in the restaurant. The music is just another great touch, all of the music is dinosaur, extinction, or end of the world themed. I just love listening to REM’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know it” while I eat my burger.

Let’s move on to the reason we’re all here: the food. I love the menu options at Restaurantosaurus because some time I might actually think about ordering something other than a cheeseburger. There’s of course my 1/3rdlb Angus Bacon Cheeseburger. However you could also order a Shrimp Po Boy, Chicken Nuggets, Veggie Subosaurus, or a Dig Site Salad. Here’s my favorite part. The veggie sub comes with sweet potato french fries. The Cast Members will gladly swap out the regular fries with the burger or po boy for the sweet potato variety. Restaurantosaurus also has one of the best fixin’s bars on property. Besides the usual lettuce, tomato, and pickles you can also get sauteéd mushrooms and onions. The salad dressing packets are also kept on the bar, so if you want to add blue cheese salad dressing to your burger, you can! (Not that I would EVER even think about doing that.) Finally this is one of the few Counter Service locations that offers refills on your beverage from beverage stations located on both sides of the restaurant!

There are just a few more things I want to add about this, my favorite cheeseburger location. First, if you need to charge your phone, camera, or iPad, this is a great place to do it. There are outlets literally all over the restaurant. Second, because the location is so large, there is never a problem finding a seat–as sometimes happens over at Pecos Bill’s or Cosmic Ray’s. Third, the bathroom here is enormous and always clean. Finally, if you have become somewhat stressed out during the course of your afternoon, you can get a Safari Amber beer, which is brewed just for Disney’s Animal Kingdom and is one of my favorite beers.

So yes, it’s just a cheeseburger, but it can be a mushroom, blue cheese burger with sweet potato fries if you want it to be! Happy Eating Everyone!

Adventures by Disney, new Member exclusives announced

The big buzz this week over on the Disney Vacation Club Member website is the announcement of three special Member-only Adventures by Disney tours later this year.

It’s something that the Disney Vacation Club hasn’t done in some time, in fact such a long time that we actually removed the page referring to the Member only itineraries from PassPorter’s Disney Vacation Club for Members and Members-to-Be in mid 2011.  Previous itineraries for the tours, which ran from 2007 to 2009, included the American southwest, the Backstage Magic tour of Hollywood, and the Disneyland resort, with the most exotic offering being the Viva Italia tour. However, this time around, the Disney Vacation Club has outdone itself with the itineraries it’s offering.

Quest for the West

Only one of the three is in the USA, and that’s the Quest for the West, which takes you on a 7-day, 6-night adventure around Wyoming. Visits include Jackson Hole, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone National Parks, and Brooks Lake Lodge.

Old Faithful's eruption dwarfs Old Faithful Inn in the background

As you’d expect from something that’s exclusive to Disney Vacation Club Members, there are little additional extras, such as a live theatrical production at the historic Jackson Hole Playhouse.

Having recently toured both national parks, I can tell you that anyone who opts for this adventure is in for a real treat, as they are both absolutely stunning, with an amazing array of landscapes to enjoy.

The Member adventure departs on July 30, 2012, and is open to all ages. It costs 443 vacation points per adult, and 421 per child.

Stunning Jenny Lake in the middle of the Grand Tetons

Enchanted China

The second option takes you to the other side of the world-literally! Enchanted China is an adults-only, 12-day, 11-night adventure, which takes you on a grand tour of China, taking in Beijing, Chengdu, home of the panda nursery that is part of my must-do list, Xi’an, where the stunning Terra Cotta Warriors are located, Guilin, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Additional extras on this tour include dinner at the China Club, one of Beijing’s most exclusive clubs, and a private tour at Shanghai Museum.

Hong Kong as seen from the Peak, overlooking the city

I have to be honest, this is an itinerary on my wish list, containing all the places I’m desperate to visit in China, but have yet had the opportunity to do so. Having been to Hong Kong, I can tell you that’s an amazing city, and one I’d love to go back to. However, I’m going to have a seriously long wait for this tour, as it would take way more points than we possess.

The Member itinerary departs on September 16, 2012, and the cost is an eye watering 917 vacation points for each adult. It’s going to take a lottery win before we’ll ever have that many points!

Sacred Valleys and Incan Cities

The final option is Sacred Valleys and Incan Cities, taking you on another adults-only tour through Peru. The 9-day, 8-night itinerary takes in the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Cusco and Lima. Additions to this tour include an outdoor lunch, and performance featuring Peruvian Paso horses, and regional dancers.

This tour also departs on September 16, 2012, and is a much more reasonable 447 points for each adult.

As if that’s not enough, don’t forget that, with each of these tours, a $95 booking fee applies, and you need to add on the cost of airfare to your tour cost.

I don’t know about you, but I love the idea of all three tours. And one lucky person who will get to enjoy all of these amazing experiences, schedule permitting, is the DVC’s Senior Vice President, and General Manager, Claire Bilby, who will be hosting farewell meals for all three tours. Not a bad way to see the world, and of course, Members will get the chance to ask anything they ever wanted to know about the Disney Vacation Club! Now there’s a job I could happily do, if it meant enjoying those destinations…

Much as the idea may appeal, with 440 points-and I thought that was a lot-there is no way that any of these itineraries are in our near or long-term future, which is a great shame. I’ve never been on an Adventures by Disney tour, but I know friends who have, and I’ve never heard anything but good things about them. Ah well, a girl can dream….

So… anyone out there tempted by these Member only tours and going to be splashing out their points on one?

Drink up! – with Disney’s refillable resort mug program

I’m a coffee drinker, and a morning just doesn’t START for me unless I have that hot cup of Joe to get my blood pumping. It doesn’t even have to be particularly great coffee, which is good, as not many people would consider the stuff you get in the food courts to be “good” coffee. For me, it just has to be caffeinated.

Disney's Refillable Resort Mugs

Disney's Refillable Resort Mugs

And the cost of couple of cups a day can really add up! Luckily, Disney offers a refillable mug program to guests staying at one of its resorts.

The History of the Refillable Resort Mug program

The Disney World resorts have been offering refillable mugs in the food courts for years and years. The first one in my collection dates back to 2002 when I went to The World as an adult, but they’ve been around for a lot longer than that.

The mugs were originally themed to the resorts themselves. The Port Orleans mugs were purple and green with the Fab 5 dressed as members of a jazz band, the Animal Kingdom Lodge’s mugs at The Mara were orange and red and had animals playing with Mickey and friends, The Beach Club had a beachy theme, and so on….

Then in late 2006, Disney World went to a “universal” design for all resorts.

The first "universal" resort mug design

The first "universal" resort mug design

At first, many of us thought it was just something they were doing for the Year of a Million Dreams campaign, and that they go back to the resort-specific mugs. But when the YoaMD and its sister campaign ended after 2007, the red “Celebrate” themed mugs popped up at all resorts, followed by the current “resort pool” mug theme that appeared in 2011.

The current modus operandi seems to be that they release a new mug design every two years. They usually begin appearing as an individual resort runs out of the previous themed mug stock – which seems to take until about February.

Will we see resort-specific mugs ever again?

Personally,  I would seriously doubt that. From a cost perspective, it makes better sense to use a “universal” design because it means they can do larger orders from the manufacturer, which results in less cost per mug. Plus, they don’t have to maintain multiple designs in their warehouses, worry about inventory management or stocking, and all that transportation around to the resorts.

All of those things bring down the cost/raise their profits considerably with the universal design — even though many guests clamor for the resort-specific ones to come back.

But what *are* the refillable mugs?

They are plastic, insulated mugs that hold about 16 ounces of fluid. They are designed to fit in most cars drink holders, have a variety of handle/lid colors, and hold up well to repeated use — even surviving many years of abuse in a dishwasher.

You can pick them up at your Disney resort’s food court – usually near the cashier stations. Once paid for, the cashier will remove the security catch so they can be used at the beverage islands for fill-ups.

If you are on the Disney Dining Plan in 2012, you will receive a mug for each person in your reservation aged 3 and over. Just go to the food court and present your Keys to the Kingdom resort room keycard and the cashier will get you your mugs.

What drinks are on offer?

Disney World is a “Coke Country,” which means they have an exclusive deal with the Coca-Cola Company to offer their sodas. That includes Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Sprite, Powerade, Barq’s Root Beer, Dr. Pepper, Minute Maid fruit drinks, Hi-C, and others.

Coffee (and creamer), hot tea, and hot chocolate are also available with the refillable mug program.

In the resort food courts, look for the soda fountains.

All-Star Music beverage island

All-Star Music beverage island

What drinks aren’t included?

Orange juice, milk and other specialty drinks are not included in the refillable mug program. Those beverages can be found for purchase in the grab-n-go section of the food court.

How many times can I use my mug?

As many times as you want – but only during the vacation in which you purchased the mug.

The Disney Refillable Resort Mugs are no longer “lifetime” mugs. In fact the Disney policy is printed right on the mugs themselves.

Refills available at no additional charge at Resort Beverage Island located in the resort that this mug was purchased through the end of your resort stay.

Do people follow this policy?

Though many, many people do follow the policy, there are those who are not “overburdened with ethics.”

We’ve all seen them – the people who bring in any random container and fill them up with “free” soda, and no amount of my giving them the stink eye seems to deter them.

However, a new program being tested at the All-Star Sports resort may bring an end to this problem. With RFID chips in the mugs themselves, a new dispenser will lock out unauthorized containers, as well as track the check-out date of the mug’s owner so that the mug cannot be used after midnight on the day they leave the resort.

Learn more about it here: Disney World Refillable Mug System Experiment

What about a vacation where I stay in two resorts?

The whole split stay issue is a grey area, about which even Disney’s front-line employees seem unclear. The language of the current policy seems to say you can’t use it at both resorts through a split stay, but some Cast Members (even management-level CMs) tell you a different story.

If and when they roll out the RFID mugs to other resorts, it will become more clear as we learn what guests on a split stay discover about their ability to use the mugs at two resorts.

What about using them at sister resorts?

If you are staying at a resort that is paired with another resort (like the three All-Star resorts, the two Port Orleans Resorts, or the Yacht Club/Beach Club), you may use the mugs at the sister resort(s) paired with your home resort. So, I could be staying at Port Orleans French Quarter and use my mug at PO Riverside.

Disney Food Blog's picture of the current mugs

Disney Food Blog's picture of the current mugs

Are they good in the theme parks or water parks?

No. You cannot refill the mugs at any beverage dispenser but the ones in your resort’s food court.

But you’re welcome to take the mugs with you! Fill them from the water fountains, or from left-over drinks at meals (as, being insulated, they do keep drinks from getting too warm too quickly.) Just keep in mind that they are not water-tight, and may leak if tipped over.

Lots of folks like to take their mug with them on the bus in the morning (though I’ve had the occasional bus driver remind me that I’m not allowed to actually drink from it while on the bus,) and it’s nice to have it with you when you drag your exhausted body back to the resort late that night. A quick fill-up might be just what you need to recoup some energy back in the room.

Are they a good value?

Like all things, that depends on you. If you’re a big soda/coffee drinker and are staying at that resort for a few days, then probably yes. If you don’t like the beverages included in the program, then probably not.

As I always say: do the math.

At between $2.00 and $2.50 per drink (which is refillable for that meal, even with the paper cups), you need to determine if will you puchase enough drinks to match the cost of the mug? With the current price of the refillable mug at about $15 with tax, you’d have to consume just 7-8 drinks in order to make the mug purchase a “wash” — and you’d come away with a nice souvenir that you can use for years to come.

Any other questions, just ask!

What a (WDW) Character; Now Eat Your Breakfast!

* YUM! *

So a few weeks ago I posted a blog (“You Can Go To Disney in the Morning?“) about the fact that it’s amazing to me (ok insert sarcasm here) that Walt Disney World (“WDW”) actually operates in the morning hours! At that time, while expressing my amazement at the fact that so many guests can even function much less make it out to the parks for rope drop in the wee hours (8 am is too a wee hour! :-P ) of the morning, I also made mention that I have actually made it not only out of bed, but out of the room and to a restaurant, once or twice, for breakfast as well! I know I was so proud of me too. :-D

Now I can’t say that this has happened more than twice, as it’s actually only happened exactly two times; however, they happened to be character meals! So, I will admit I was a bit apprehensive about us being adults-only at a character meal (and so early in the day! LOL), but let me say, once I was out the door and in line at the buffet with a few of my favorite pals: Mickey and Donald and Minnie and Goofy and Pluto (am I missing anyone?), they were more than happy to see this adult smiling and grinning from ear to ear with a few delicious Mickey waffles on her plate!

Have you ever done a character meal? How did you like it? Would you book one again?

Cape May Buffet

The first breakfast was with Goofy and friends over at Cape May Buffet (“CMB”). My mom and I decided to try there because the Yacht Club/Beach Club resorts area is her favorite place on property, and I have to say, it was amazing! We booked for one of their last seatings — hey baby steps! — and even with us being one of the few guests left by the end of our first plate, we were never rushed, the characters didn’t skip us, and there was still enough fresh food out if we were able to eat all that we wanted (my jeans were thankfully restricting that urge — and my breathing, but that’s a good thing sometimes!).

I have a few pictures from that morning; however, for as much as I love my mom, her lack of understanding how my cell phone camera worked didn’t yield the greatest pictures of me. LOL Thankfully hers came out great! (Although I wish the quality was a little better!)

Goofy & Mom @ CMB

and

Me & Donald @ CMB

We actually had a really great time, and I have to say I really want to try and make it back over there one of these trips as the food was really good and the characters were very interactive even with it being just the two of us. The variety of food choices seemed to have a lot more fruits and eggs and “fresh” offerings, other than the usual bacon, waffles, etc. However, with my limited morning appearances at the buffets, perhaps there isn’t really a major difference between locations?

Do the different breakfast buffets provide any breakfast items that are unique to its location/restaurant?

Chef Mickey’s

Our second experience was over at Chef Mickey’s (“CM’s”) inside the Contemporary Resort. That was a super fun meal, but mainly because we were seated literally two tables over from the guys in Boys II Men; they were on property for their appearance during Epcot’s Food & Wine Festival! Now don’t get me wrong, the napkin waving, which is one of the mealtime rituals at this eatery, was cute, but, admittedly, I chickened out and ran up to the buffet line to get out of having to throw crumbs all over my neighbors! *snickers* What? I was totally only thinking of them! :-D

The rest of the meal, though, was satisfactory food-wise. Everything was fresh and hot (if you got that sort of item!), and there was plenty of everything, but I don’t remember a plethora of fruit, etc. like I do for CMB. Regardless, I got some great pictures of the characters — mostly from a distance or with our neighboring tables (although there are a couple with us too!), but some of the candid shots were *chuckles* priceless!

Minnie & "Friend" @ CM's

Um, yeah, this was right next to our table, and I was (and still am!) laughing so hard when I noticed this completely innocent, albeit very hilarious, “hug” on Minnie that this little girl had. So, like any good person with a devious send of humor, I grabbed my camera! *laughs harder*

Ok, ok, there are other more family-friendly pictures that we took:

Minnie @ CM's * See? She's fine! *laughs*

And, of course:

Goofy @ CM's

Hmm, and interestingly enough there are no pictures of Mickey! Oh well, he was definitely there; however, he was probably avoiding the inevitable napkin-to-the-eye-if-you’re-not-careful too!

In any event, I just wanted to write about the great experiences — even if it’s only been two thus far! — we’ve had while also finding out about which of your own meals were just as memorable, because — yes! — you can be an adult at the character meals and eat in the morning at WDW!

So until next time!

You Deserve to be Pampered

Hi all – sorry I disappeared last week. I headed down to Disney World for “One More Disney Day”, and of course since I’ve been home, work and my personal life have been go, go, go….

So – now that I am back, I need to get back into the blog…

Today, Chris and I were talking about what we things we love the most at Walt Disney World and we both came up with “spa treatments” and we love them on the Disney ships too!! Talk about a WONDERFUL, relaxing, romantic and pampering thing to do during your vacation.

I have been lucky enough to have spa treatments at both of Disney’s signature spas, the spa at Disney’s Grand Floridian resort and the spa at Disney’s Saratoga Springs resort.  I think that one of the most wonderful things you can do together as a couple is have a couple’s massage at one of the spas. Before we started dating, Chris had never had a massage. NEVER (insert my shaking head here)… maybe its a guy thing. For my 38th birthday Chris had our travel agent help him book a couple’s massage at the Grand Floridian spa. I remember Chris’ response being something along the lines of this…..

Hubby after his first ever massage...

when we were done (what a goofy, happy guy). He was VERY happy and nice and relaxed.  We had a couples massage where each of us had a separate massage treatment in the same treatment room with two therapists.  I remember overhearing him tell his therapist that “your husband or boyfriend is a lucky man”. I guess that meant he liked it.

In addition to the Grand Floridian spa, Disney has another full service spa at the Saratoga Springs Resort. Both facilities offer specific couples treatments, for example the spa at Saratoga Springs resort offers a Couple’s relaxation massage.  Although there are two full service spas at Walt Disney World, massage and spa treatments are also available from the Zahanati Massage & Fitness Center at the Animal Kingdom Lodge; and many of the other Deluxe resorts offer massage treatments by appointment.

In addition to spa services at Walt Disney World, the Disney Cruise Line offers full service spas on all four of its ships.  In 2009, while cruising with my family, I introduced Chris to the Vista spa on the Disney Magic. We joke that since we don’t drink, and thus don’t have a bar bill when we are onboard the ships, we take those funds for our spa bill.

Private hot tub in the Spa Suite

We were fortunate to be able to have our treatment in one of the spa suites and chose to have the Couples Choice, which is a 130 minute including a private hot tub, a lime and ginger leg salt scrub, a treatment of your choice for each of you and lastly hot tea and fresh fruit while relaxing on the roman lounge. HEAVEN!!! HIGHLY recommended. I think that all four of the ships offer the spa suites in each of the spas. The really nice thing is that the spas are in rooms where the doors open to a veranda, so you can enjoy the port or ocean views while you soak your tension away.

Couples Massage treatment tables on the Disney Magic

We took advantage of the spa on the Magic again during our honeymoon in April 2010 with four different spa treatments. In addition to repeating the Couples Choice in the spa suite, we also had a massage, and spent time in the Exotic Rasul. Disney did not bring the Exotic Rasul to the Dream, and I don’t think they brought it to the Fantasy either, but this unique and very romantic option remains onboard the Magic and the Wonder.

While Chris and I have cruised on the Dream, I was unable to visit the spa for any treatments (although Chris was…. color me jealous!) which means we have to cruise on the ship again so that I can have a treatment (or two) while onboard!!

One thing to think about, before booking that spa treatment is if your significant other would be comfortable with a massage or spa treatment. I was not sure if Chris would be, and one piece of advice he gave me for this blog installment is to discuss the treatment with your significant other. Some people have issues with strangers touching them when they are nude or covered by a very small undergarment provided by the spa an covered only by a sheet. Or they may not be comfortable with strangers of the same sex touching them. If they have issues along these lines, be sure to request your (or their) therapist be of a specific sex (i.e. a man may not want a male therapist). You could also go to a day spa at home to see how they may react and feel to strangers touching them. Better to find out they don’t enjoy spa treatments/massages before you are on your vacation.

One quick note – if you are planning on a spa treatment while you are at Walt Disney World this year (2012), it appears that your main location will be the Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa.  According to the Walt Disney World website, the spa at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa will be closed for enhancements from September 19, 2011 to early 2013.

If you and your significant other decide that spa treatments and massages are for you while you are vacationing, I hope you enjoy them as much as we do and look forward to those pampering, romantic getaways.

Thanks for reading, and we will see you in the happiest (and most romantic) place on earth.

Terri & Chris!!

So how do you want to show you’re a Disney Vacation Club member?

Having looked at the latest merchandise from Disney Vacation Club, and having heard from quite a few of you about what you thought of that (and thanks for all the comments, they’ve been great to read), I thought maybe it was time to look at what I’d like to see….

First off, I’m not a million miles away from what’s already been produced, but first I want to pick up on something Stephanie Evans told us in response to my original merchandise blog. She said: “The tee shirts, unfortunately, are the cheaper ones Disney gets, guaranteed to shrink and twist. I don’t understand why some of their shirts are good Hanes preshrunk cotton and some are that cheap 100% cotton that isn’t preshrunk that ends up toddler size.”

Well, here’s my first request off the back of that. Please, please, please steer away from the cheap material that barely makes it through a few washes, and go back to the lovely, admittedly more expensive, cloth that you used to use for your T-shirts. It may not mean so many sales, but trust me, it’ll mean more happy customers. ;)

Don’t just restrict yourself to T-shirts for the individual resorts. I want to see a lot more of the resort merchandise. Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud to wear my colors on my sleeve, and declare I’m a Disney Vacation Club member, but at the end of the day, I bought into a resort. To me, it’s the beloved Beach Club Villas, although the Animal Kingdom Lodge Villas do come a close second, even if we have no points there. So that’s what I want to show off.

Some of the great Beach Club merchandise Disney used to sell....

If I tell you that some of my favorite Disney items ever are my Beach Club hat, and hoodie. I’ve had both years, probably about a decade now, and I look every time we’re at the Beach Club for replacements, just in case the worst should happen… I never find anything. I ask every time we’re there, so much so that I think the Cast Members see me coming, and run and hide…

Not only is there little Beach Club merchandise, but as for the Beach Club Villas, there’s even less. We can’t be the only ones who loves their home resort, and surely there’s got to be a market out there?

While we’re on the subject of resort specific merchandise, can we have some fridge magnets as well, as I’ve still got a few gaps on my fridge that need filling up…

Ok, you’re getting the idea here. Resort specific stuff is good, very good. However, if we’re just talking Disney Vacation Club merchandise, then something I would dearly love to see is a good book all about the DVC. Now, I’m not talking about my own, PassPorter’s Disney Vacation Club for Members and Members-to—Be, although heck, it’s a good read, even if I do say so myself. No, I’m talking about a coffee table style book, at least A4 size, a hardback, that looks at what the Disney Vacation Club has achieved over its first 20 years.

Maybe add a Disney Vacation Club book to those already out?

Before you roll your eyes and say “that’ll never take off”, there’s a reason I suggest this. We got “20 years under the sun”, which is a fascinating read, and exactly the type of book I’m describing, perfect for any coffee table. It takes a look at the first two decades of Cirque du Soleil, and how it evolved, and enlarged. Even though I’m quite a fan of Cirque, I learnt a huge amount from it, and have a wonderful souvenir of something I’m very fond of. Now why wouldn’t that work for the Disney Vacation Club as well?

I’m also looking for things that are easy to transport, like many people I’m sure. How much room do you honestly have in your hand luggage for things like mugs? If you’re anything like me, not much. I don’t want to risk fragile things in my suitcase being thrown around in the hold, so give me things I can easily get home. Pins are great for that, perhaps also mousemats, they’re easy to get home as well. And let’s be honest, much as I love them, if cuddly toys get a little crushed in a case, it’s only their ego that’s bruised… well, that’s what I tell myself anyway! How about a Disney Vacation Club Duffy bear?

Ok, so perhaps I’m dreaming here somewhat, but one thing I do certainly want to see with the Disney Vacation Club merchandise one day in the future is the ability to order it online, with reasonable shipping fees to the UK of course! In all seriousness, why not? Nearly everything else is now available online, so why not our member merchandise?

Now it’s over to you. What do you want to see being created in the future? Would you buy anything that I’ve suggested, or am I totally off the mark?

Did You Leap (at Walt Disney World)?

February 29th

Happy Leap Day (one day late)! No, I’m posting this on March 1st for a reason. ;-)

February 29th, better known as “Leap Day,” was celebrated like only Walt Disney World (“WDW”) can do: The Magic Kingdom park (as well as the Disneyland park in California) was open for an entire 24 hours!

Yay for Leap Day!

Yep! Disney proceeded to keep both parks, on each coast, open from 6am on February 29th to 6am on March 1st (i.e. this morning)! I soooo wished I could have been there, but since I couldn’t…

Were any of you there?

How long did you stay in the park?

And, more importantly, did you outlast the kids?

I was wondering how many of us Big Kids were out and about and hitting the rides in the wee hours of the morning — as a natural Night Owl, I know I would have been one of them!

So, congratulations if you were one of the lucky ones at:

WDW

or at:

Disneyland

And, because alcohol is not sold in the MK, I hope you at least had a Dole Whip Float “night cap” for the rest of “leaping” elsewhere last night. :-D So for those of you that were there until closing, you can just let me know after you finally wake up! *chuckles*

Until next time…
