I strongly suggest a stroller for a 3 year old
Like Sara said, even older children need to rest, and I think sometimes we take for granted how much their little bodies can take. It'll avoid the meltdowns that will ruin a good trip in a second. Take whichever stroller you are comfortable with and TSA will deal with it accordingly.
