Purchasing APs at Disney Store

This isn't for planning my own trip, but a question for guests I help at work. When you arrive at WDW and you have already purchased your AP at the Disney Store, can you bypass the line for purchasing tickets somehow? I'm assuming because of how the APs are printed that the card you purchase is an exchange voucher and not your actual pass.

Guests at the store asked about this today and no one was positive of the answer. I know that park tickets purchased at the store can get you right in at the gate, but it seems to me that an AP wouldn't. If that's the case, I can't see the advantage of purchasing ahead of time. Would there be a price difference at the gate, as there is with tickets?

If someone has done this before, please let me know about your experience. TIA.
