Virtual memory help

HELP!! I keep getting the message that either I'm running low on virtual memory or I don't have enough to run a program (in this case a CD game for Abby). What the heck is virtual memory and what can I do with it? The computer has a default setting (I don't know how I even found this but I did) but should I change it, can I change it without crashing the computer? Thanks for any kind of help.
