It didn't seem much farther from the "side entrance" of Grand Californian (which opens onto Downtown Disney) to the Disneyland entrance than from the Disneyland Hotel to the monorail station. If you're not in the "main" tower at the Disneyland Hotel, the walk to the monorail would be even longer. I can't say whether the additional cost of the GC is justified, but it sure was convenient to get to the parks from there.
