From NYC - I would go over the GWB (80West) into Jersey and hook up with 287 to 78 into PA and then 78 to 81S - the mileage is more but the traffic is 1/2 and we have found although we drive further we are in the car less (don't get stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on Jersey turnpike and through Washington.

There have to be other ways as well. We have taken a few local roads in the Washington area to save time as well. Another alternative through Washington is the Baltimore - Washington Expressway (which can be quicker even though the speed limit is lower).
