Re: The Slight Soggy, Mostly Memorable Trip Report

NEXT: We’re having breakfast at the Castle!

Dates: June 20-29
Adventurers: Robbi (Me!), Dean (DH), DD’s: Nicole ( 9 ½) & Ashley (7)
Resort: Port Orleans – Riverside
Celebration: Summer Vacation & the End of School!

Saturday, June 22nd: The alarm went off at 6:30 and I’m so excited! We were having breakfast at Cinderella’s Royal Table at 9:50! I had tried and tried for our last 3 trips to get Priority Seating to no avail. About 2 weeks before we were ready to leave, Jean at the Passporter Boards had posted about a PS for CRT that one of her clients couldn’t use for today and I was lucky enough to take it (Thanks again, Jean!) The girls had known that I didn’t get reservations originally and I decided not to tell them. We all got ready and Nicole and Ashley say “Off to Animal Kingdom!” Dean and I tell them we changed our minds and we’re actually going to Magic Kingdom. We open the door at 7:50 to a torrential rain. This is when I realize that only 2 of our ponchos made it to WDW (the other 2 were still hanging in the basement after our wet Girl Scout camping trip.) We make it to the bus stop and get on the bus to MK. We arrive at MK at 8:10 and go to our 1st security check. I go to check in for priority seating and the CM can’t find our ressie (under our assumed name) because the pages are sticking together due to the driving rain. The CM next to him says “Just let them in; if they came out in this weather, they must have reservations!” We enter MK and our 1st stop is the shop just left of the gate where we purchase 2 new WDW ponchos.

It was empty! Pouring rain, 50 minutes before opening, and I’m nervous because “the name” wasn’t on the PS list. We tromp up to the castle and I secretly go to check in. I tell the CM that I wanted to check in early and she asked why. I explained that our name wasn’t at the gate and that if they had anything earlier we’d take it. She said sure! It seems that the weather had deterred a number of guests. At this point I motion Dean & the girls over and we tell them that we’re having breakfast with the Princesses. They went nuts & I earned many mommy bonus points. We were seated by 8:20. What a cool place! Our server came over and said “Hello, I’ll be your tenant today!” and did the whole “Lord & Lady” bit which we all enjoyed. The princesses were on the other side of the room, so we were able to eat before they visited. I had the traditional breakfast (yes, the chocolate muffins were yummy!) and Dean had the very healthy muesli and yogurt plate which he loved. The princesses came over one at a time (Cinderella, Snow White, Belle, Jasmine, Mary Poppins) and the girls had their autograph books out and ready. They were all quite nice and we loved the poses they assumed for the pictures. Poor Mary Poppins had a cold! We finished up and headed downstairs to hit the park. That’s when we saw the Fairy Godmother holding court downstairs. We get her autograph and picture and hit the park. It’s only 9:10!

We hit the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh first, followed quickly by Snow White, Peter Pan’s Flight and it’s a Small World. MK was quite empty but the rain was starting to slow and people were filtering in. We head over to Adventureland where Dean and the girls are disappointed to see that Splash Mountain is not running. We hit Big Thunder Mountain Railroad twice in a row. The sun is coming out now and it’s starting to get a little humid. We ride the new Aladdin ride, and then go to the Tiki Room followed by Pirates of the Caribbean. We walk over to my favorite MK attraction, Buzz Lightyear, where I am the high scorer of the family. We visit the shops on Main Street and decide to leave for our afternoon break. The clouds were starting to build again! We get the bus back to Port Orleans as the rain begins again.

The original plan was to hit the pool and have lunch but that wasn’t going to happen today. We finally got to the food court at 3 and had a late lunch. On the way back to the room Ashley says “Look out Dad! There’s an alligator by you!” We all kind of jump and say “where?” She starts laughing and says “On the sign; see it says ‘Alligator Bayou’” Ha, ha, ha. Nothing quite like a 7 year old with a slapstick sense of humor. We went back to the room where we watched some TV and vegged out. I may have taken a brief nap.

We decided to head to Epcot for the evening. We were ready to leave when the thunderstorms rolled in again. We drove over to Epcot with our handy dandy ponchos on. We went on Spaceship Earth 1st (no line!) then went over to Test Track which was not running due to the weather. OK, we’ll head over to the new Journey into Your Imagination. We loved it! So cute, so funny, catchy song! We spent some time in the imagination pavilion where we emailed a picture home. Ice Station Cool was next, where we enjoyed watching people try the “Beverly.” We walked around World Showcase for a time and ended our evening in Maelstrom. We decided not to stay for Illuminations since we had PS’s for Rose & Crown later in the week, so we beat the crowd out and drove back to PO-R. A very nice end to a very magical (but wet) 1st day!

Next: Animal Kingdom, Boma & more rain!
