Spring Break in the World, March 8-14, Offsite, Day 2 Added!

The Cast:
Me, Courtney, 20 year old college junior, 30+ trip veteran, haven’t been in about 5 years
My boyfriend Patrick, 21 year old college senior, first trip
My grandparents, more trips than I’ve made, grandmother just had knee surgery and is still using a cane, still having some difficulty with walking

Our Journey: We drove down from good ol’ NC the 8th, drove back the 14th. My grandfather drove the entire way there and back, allowing the rest of us some quality resting time!

Our Lodging: We stayed at Comfort Inn Maingate West. It was supernice, super cheap, and SO close to everything! It took us less than 3 minutes to drive from our hotel to a parking space within the parks. Perfect location. Very clean, decent continental breakfast, overall pretty good.

Pre-trip: First of all, I have not been getting NEARLY as much as I should for school done in the weeks before our trip because, for some reason, I spend all my time on Disney message boards! Hehe Anyway, on with our trip. Due to the fact that Patrick and I go to college about 5 hours away from where my house and my grandparents house is, our trip started a little earlier. Something else that needs to be mentioned…I completely messed up my neck somehow the day before we left school, Thursday. I work for a chiropractor, I had gotten up around 6am, gotten dressed, went to work, and about 9:30, I could not move my head. It was bad. I let him adjust me for the first time ever (which I’m not sure helped any) and continued on in pain, happy that I had finished packing my suitcase the day before and only had toiletries still to pack. On Friday, the 7th, I got out of class around 11am. Patrick picked me up on campus, we drove back to our apartments (we’re next door neighbors!) and finished getting everything together and loaded into the car. After our relatively short drive (it only took around 4 and a half hours), we were at my grandparents house (we were spending the night there instead of my house so my parents didn’t have to wake up early too). We went to eat at a little Japanese place with my grandparents and parents, then went back and started getting everybody ready for bed. Then it’s off to sleep for our early morning!

March 8, Day 1-The car trip

Our goal was to be leaving my grandparents’ house by 6am, the time they normally leave when it’s just the two of them. Even though they didn’t expect twice the number of people to be ready on time, but we were pulling out of the driveway at 2 till 6. Patrick and I slept away the morning. We stopped for breakfast at McDonald’s, then kept on down the road. Patrick and I had packed packs of crackers, jelly rolls, candy, and some “Mountain Lions” (the Food Lion answer to Mtn. Dew) for snacks in the car and hotel room, and we layed into those quite a bit…hehe. I was struggling pretty much the whole ride with my neck still being a problem. I couldn’t get very comfortable, and when I would wake up, it’d be even worse. I was taking pain pills leftover from my wisdom teeth extraction to help me cope with the pain (yes, I checked it out with a doctor first, hehe!) Anyway, we stopped in Brunswick, GA for some Sonny’s Barbecue. MMMMMMMMMmmmmmm that place is VERY good, so all of you that drive down 95, you should try it! We kept on driving with relatively little traffic for most of the afternoon. Then it happened. We skipped our traditional stop at the Florida welcome center for juice, and we’ve decided that that was the source of the rest of our troubles. Traffic got bad in Florida, especially the farther south we got. It was so frustrating because we knew we were so close, but we just couldn’t get there! We did eventually make it, the time didn’t mess us up all that bad. We got to the hotel around 5pm. After we checked in and moved in all our luggage (and yes, I WAY overpacked!), we headed out to Downtown Disney.

Our main goal at DTD was to find some dinner. After we finally found a parking space, we headed in. First thing we saw was McDonald’s….I managed to steer them away from that. We ate at the Wolfgang Puck counter service place. It was really good! That sandwich was awesome! Bread was perfect, meat was perfect, and it was HUGE! After dinner, we went to check on exchanging our AP vouchers (for my grandparents and me, Patrick had a 5 day Park Hopper) while at DTD, but since we would’ve lost a day on them by doing it then, we decided to wait until the next morning. After that, my grandparents turned us loose to just go shop and look around, since grandmother didn’t want to walk too much and not even be in the park yet. I was shocked at how crowded it was that night, and how many pre-teen girls were walking around wearing nowhere NEAR enough clothing. I guess I missed that generation of girls by a couple of years, because it drives me crazy! The things these little girls wear I would not leave my house in now, as a 20 year old! Anyway, that’s my little rant. So we looked around and started getting ideas of things we wanted to buy, but we were waiting, in case there was something we HAD to have later. Besides, coming back to DTD was definitely an option, since the parks were closing pretty early. We finished up there and went back to the hotel to get ready for bed and our first day in the parks!

Weather today was: Chilly the whole way down, until we were literally IN Orlando. Then the weather was perfect!

Best thing today: Worst thing today: Getting there!
Worst thing today: The car ride, the traffic, and my still not so good neck (which made me look like I was constantly holding a telephone!)

Today we tried: Sonny’s Barbecue in Brunswick, GA
Result: A

Magical Moment of the Day: Getting there and knowing we didn’t have anything pressing on us (like school) for the next week

Next up: Magic Kingdom, or “Why aren’t your shoes wet?”
