This exact same thing happened to me several times last June while trying to make ADRs for our Christmas trip last year. There were 9 in our traveling party, so needless to say, I was super-paranoid about showing up at Disney and not having an ADR! But every time I would make a new reservation and then cancel a prior one, I would get a cancellation email showing that the new ADR had been cancelled, when, in fact, the new one was still in place and the old one had been cancelled. Every time it happened, I called Disney Dining and made them go through every reservation I had to make sure that their list still matched mine. I know they probably thought I was a lunatic!
From a big picture perspective, I love Disney, but it seems to me that they are seriously lagging behind in technology. The online dining reservation system has never been reliable -- sometimes it won't recognize your reservation #, sometimes your reservations "disappear" and you have to search for them, sometimes it sends you cancellation notices for ADRs you didn't cancel. For a company with the resources of Disney, I honestly expect a bit more.
