What is your favorite resort outside of Disney? Well this thread proves we love traveling to places outside of Disney occasionally! Who has a favorite place they love to visit? An especially nice resort perhaps? Do share!

| Re: What is your favorite resort outside of Disney? It's not necessarily a resort, but it does have one hotel - I think... Isle of Palms just off the coast of Charleston, SC. We visited the beach there last summer during a last minute trip to visit an ailing family member. The beach is kept scrupulously clean and the water is just the right temperature for kicking off your shoes and rolling up your jeans to frolic in the shallow waves. Check out this site for more info on the beaches Isle of Palms County Park . There's a small restaurant/bar with a boardwalk leading out to the beach, named Coconut Joe's . They have live Raegae(sp?)/Carribe/steel drum bands performing on the rooftop bar several times a week and an awesome menu, including our new favorite - Gumbolaya, a Lowlands mix of spicy gumbo and jambalaya. Or you can try something a little more native. The name of the local cuisine escapes me. (I'll have to call my uncle. He'll know.) Great if you like new food experiences, but beware - alligator meat isn't for everyone! Walt and I loved driving arond the island to look at the older homes and the bunkerhouse as well as the coastguard station/lighthouse. Lots to see and do for such a small island. Also plenty of nightlife and other restaurants and clubs. Due to the nature of our visit, we were unable to fully explore the island and look forward to returning this summer or next with our little girl. | Re: What is your favorite resort outside of Disney? Disney's Hilton Head Resort in Hilton Head, SC. Beautiful. Absolutelty beautiful. HH is the most relaxing, tranquil place I have ever visited. I love the slowed down pace, the friendly people, and the charming shops. This is a place I could visit year after year after year. Michelle P.S. It's still a bit of Disney, without being total "Disney." Does that make sense?! |

Re: What is your favorite resort outside of Disney? Great topic. Love to get ideas for new places to go. 1. Peter Island Resort -- British Virgin Islands The BVI in general and PIR in particular are amazing. 50 room private island, no cars, no TVs, incredible food and drinks, breathtaking vistas of surrounding islands everywhere you turn, beautiful beaches, crystal clear water, great snorkeling and sailing. It's got that "too good to be true" Disney feel to it and I think that's why we liked it so much. 2. Alta Peruvian Lodge -- Alta, Utah (forty minutes straight up -- as in just about vertical -- from Salt Lake airport) Hands down, the best skiing on the planet. Enormous mountain, incredible terrain, and champagne powder that never quits. Alta Ski Area sits at the tip of a Canyon in a microclimate that gets between 500 and 700 inches of snow/year (20 year average of 500"/season). And like that's not enough, because the temperature is consistently jut right, it's some of the lightest powder in the world. Not to mention, the Alta Ski Area literraly sits back to back with theSnowbird Ski Resort and you can actually ski back and forth between the two on one ticket! Whew! That's exciting just to think about. If you love to ski, this place is the holy land and I firmly believe no skier should leave this earth without at least one Alta trip. I'm convinced if Walt were a big skier, the Peruvian Lodge would've been his place to stay. 3. The Gastonian Inn , Savannah Georgia For a shorter trip. We went a couple years ago and had the best time. Incredibly romantic. The city's full of great food, music, hospitality. 4. Lastly, I'll say pretty much any trip to Florida. No matter where we go there's never anything quite like the feel of arriving in Orlando with the warmth, the palm trees and that Disney voice on the airport monorail. So many great memories. Nothing tops that. That's the best of times. [ 03-29-2002, 12:02 PM: Message edited by: mattjs ]

Re: What is your favorite resort outside of Disney? Well all of Hawaii but since there is no real resort to make me say that, I'll go with the Atlantis at Paradise Island, Nassau. The grounds with the many pools, water slides, lazy river, beach, fish tanks, etc. are spectacular. To make it an even more affordable trip, stay across the street at Comfort Suites. You not only get a continental breakfast everday but you also get full use of the facilities at the Atlantis, including room charging privileges.

Re: What is your favorite resort outside of Disney? My ultimate favorite place to stay is the Bitter End Yacht Club in Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. You can get a package that includes all of your meals, and for all of you boating enthusiasts, unlimited use of all watercraft. They also offer daily excursions (at no extra charge) for guests for snorkeling, visits to nearby islands, etc. It is wonderful. Another great place, The Meridian Club at Pine Cay in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Very small, secluded and romantic. KathyL.

Re: What is your favorite resort outside of Disney? dadtojbj, OMG! Are there other places to vacation outside of WDW? We live in Texas so we either go totally east to Fl, or west to California. Rarely go north. A couple of our favorite places are: Hawaii - has to be the number 1 destination. We love all the islands, if I have to choose I would say Maui/Marriott. But I'll take the hustle bustle of Honolulu anyday. Lake Tahoe - Fallen Leaf Lake is my favorite place, and this would be in spring or summer. I don't do snow. I'm a California girl and dislike the cold. San Luis Obispo - and surrounding areas. I love to be by the ocean. Any of the coastal cities Monterey, Carmel etc. Or anything above San Francisco is good. Love them all. Beaner - I'm pretty sure it was Isle of Palms that they showed on Travel channel last nite. It was wonderful. Made me want to go there. We've been to alot of the VI areas, but missed the trip to Virgin Gorda - I have regretted it ever since. Maybe another time. dadtojbj - by the way Congratulations! on your new position Disneyfan [ 03-30-2002, 10:37 AM: Message edited by: DISNEYFAN ]

Re: What is your favorite resort outside of Disney? Our favorite destination is Whistler, Canada, for the best skiing experience in North America. They have 2 great mountains with over 7,000 acres of skiable terrain (1 mile verticle). Gorgeous scenery. Wonderful, friendly people from all over the world. A wonderful walking village at the base of the Mt.s, with great nightlife and restaurants. And the exchange rate can't be beat! This has become our yearly trip.
