Favorite NYC attraction Hey everyone! My first visit to New York City is coming up in 4 days! HELP! What is your favorite attraction in New York? I'd love ANY tips on fun things to do! THANKS! P.S. We DO have Lion King tickets and I'm stoked about it - anyone seen it? [ 03-28-2002, 10:14 PM: Message edited by: Dadtojbj ]

Re: Favorite NYC attraction American Craft Museum or the Museum of American Folk Art, along with typical MoMA, Met museums. Oh the Museum of Natural History (72nd or ? and CPW) may still have the Mikimoto Pearl Exhibit that even my nephews aged 8 and 10 enjoyed. Forbes Gallery, they have a great Faberge egg collection. Theatre: "Metamorphoses" at Circle in the Square, it was great. The new musical to see is Oklahoma! Oh your kids would probably enjoy Serendipity III for ice cream, right around the corner from Bloomingdales. [ 03-28-2002, 10:36 PM: Message edited by: Bert & Sully ]

Re: Favorite NYC attraction Museum of Natural History is awesome, I highly recommend that, you could get lost and not mind at all! Madame Tussaud's is a nice diversion, although a bit pricey. Of course the 5th Avenue Disney Store is a classic and FAO Schwartz is a few blocks down. And I always like to go to the top of Macy's on 34rd? and 8th, but that's a guilty pleasure, I just like the wooden escalators! -Jose Carioca

Re: Favorite NYC attraction Oh, Steve, you and your family are going to LOVE the Lion King! We saw it last March and we talked about it for weeks. It's THE best show I've seen on Broadway ever.

Re: Favorite NYC attraction You'll love New York, and the Lion King was GREAT! I have to second the recommendation for the Museum of Natural History. A few other ideas for fun things to do: * Carriage ride through Central Park...kinda pricey, but memorable and a very NY experience. * Liberty Science Center (just over the Hudson into NJ)...great kids museum. You would need to get there via ferry, though; at the moment Holland Tunnel only available to EasyPass users. * If you like Greek food try Molyvos, on 7th (between 55th & 56th). * McSorleys--it's the oldest bar in New York. Their beer (brewed there) is good and the place has great atmosphere. * The candied cashews you get from street vendors in NY...I'm addicted. * For fun atmosphere and relatively inexpensive food I'd recommend Virgils. It's also located off Times Square which makes it convenient before going to a show. DH would go there for the biscuts and honey butter alone!! Enjoy your trip. September

Re: Favorite NYC attraction Oy, how can you choose when there's a lifetime's worth of places to see? Metropolitan Museum of Art - You can spend a week there. My favorites? French Impressionist collections, Temple of Dendur & Egyptian collection, Japanese and Chinese collections (including a Chinese meditation garden), and the American wing, including a fabulous indoor "garden" that includes remarkable Tiffany windows. Other favorites include the Medieval armor collection and the rooftop scupture garden. The Cloisters (a division of the Metropolitan way uptown near the George Washington Bridge)--Actual sections of Medieval churches and monastaries, woven into a single museum - if you love the architecture at World Showcase, you'll die for this! It's especially nice in the spring, when the cloistered gardens and surrounding parklands are sprouting. Central Park, Central Park Zoo NY Botanical Gardens and Bronx Zoo--Next-door neighbors, up in the Bronx Empire State Building observation deck Lincoln Center (take a tour, even if you don't catch a concert or show) Walk around Midtown in the 5th Avenue/Rockefeller Center area South Street Seaport--maritime museum, shops, restaurants, entertainment NY Public Library main branch at 5th Ave & 41st St - the place with the "Library Lions." Greenwich Village/Washington Square - take a walking tour To get a sense of Manhattan, try driving Broadway from one end of the island to the other. Ah, I'm getting nostalgic just thinking about it all!

Re: Favorite NYC attraction The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History are the best. Also, how about a stroll through Central Park...down by the Plaza Hotel? I used to live in NYC and loved the Central Park Zoo. Don't forget about ice skating at Rockefellar Center. There is so much to do. KathyL.

Re: Favorite NYC attraction Did anyone mention Ellis Island? Very cool....my relatives are listed there! Take a horse drawn carraige ride around Central Park. And make sure you have a "dirty water dog" from a street corner hot dog vendor! Very NY! Sue

Re: Favorite NYC attraction Steve, are you planning to be outside NBC's studios holding up a homemade sign at, say, 7 or 8 a.m.? If so, say hello to Al Roker for me! Where are you staying while you're there? [ 03-29-2002, 10:47 PM: Message edited by: Janet44 ]

Re: Favorite NYC attraction My favorite attraction in NYC is "the streets". Walk everywhere you can! We usually stay at the Roosevelt Hotel. The Celio deli is awesome and the bakery on the same block is fabulous too. All we do when we are walking is remember The Bronx are up and the Battery is down. My personal rule, If you don't see lots of yellow cabs-go back to a street where you do! Have fun.

Re: Favorite NYC attraction Oh so many choices! My top five would be: *Statue of Liberty * Empire State Building * Shopping along fifth avenue (even if you just window shop - don't miss it!) * Shopping and brunch in Soho (try Balthazar - great food and the occasional celebrity sighting) * Broadway play - you will love the Lion King, its my absolute favorite! Have fun! Jacquelyn
