Re: What local attractions near you are worth seeing? Great topic! I live in a suburb of Fort Worth and it's an awesome place to visit! The Stockyards are a real adventure and the Cattle Rancher's Museum is really unique. I live in Arlington and the Ballpark and Six Flags Over Texas are each a must see. We love it there and watch the Rangers every chance we get. We're minutes away from Dallas and that's another vacation all in itself! Whether you're interested in the Grassy Knoll where Kennedy was assasinated or you're looking to soak up some nightlife, Big D has it all. Maybe I'm biased, but Texas is my favorite State! My boss is a state senator and recenlty told me an interesting bit of Texan trivia. Did you know Texas is the only state in the union that is able to fly their state flag on the same level as the nation's flag? It's because Texas is a Republic! Pretty interesting. In a nutshell, there is something for everyone in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. Ya'll come!

Re: What local attractions near you are worth seeing? I'm only about 5 minutes from Yale. They have some great museums and librarys and they offer tours of the campus. The architecture of the old buildings is just awesome. We have the Amistad docked in New Haven every summer! Within an hours drive in any direction are some great attraction. Mystic Seaport and Aquarium, Gillette Castle, Norwalk Maritime Center. Lots of things to see and do here in the Nutmeg state!

Re: What local attractions near you are worth seeing? I trained lifeguards at Dorney several years ago! There is nothing really to do here in Colorado except ski, hike, sail, fish, hunt(yuck), visit the many museums, and watch the Broncos, Avalanche, and if you're really bored, the Nuggets and Rockies. The mountains are 20 minutes from Denver. In the Four Corners area you have Mesa Verde National Park, the Great Sand Dunes, and Telluride. Next to WDW, Mesa Verde is my favorite facation spot. Denver is also the home of the water park I worked at for 17 years, Water World. It's a mere 64 acres with about 50 rides. Very few steps to climb at this waterpark as it is built into a hill. Colorado finally has indoor plumbing and electricty. We do, however, still have the cowboys herding cows down the center of town.

Re: What local attractions near you are worth seeing? patsy-c already covered the big city Omaha area, while I spend a lot of time there, I actually live 300 miles away, on the edge of the great Nebraska Sandhills. (This was actually a question on Millionaire a few weeks ago . . . "Where are the largest sand dunes in the United States" . . . he blew it as he didn't know.) My seven year old was yelling at the screen "Nebraska, Nebraska". He polled the audience . . and they got it wrong, too! Actually, it is some of the most beautiful, peaceful country you'll ever see. They cover the HUGE Ogalala Aquifer that stores vasts amounts of water. I suppose to most it might be a boring drive, but to me it is heaven. There is also Lake McConaughy, 23 miles long and has white sandy beaches that rival the Bahamas. Great fishing, sail boating and very natural and undeveloped. Fires on the beach, and you can pull your camper right down to the waters edge. Buffalo Bills Scout Rest Ranch, a home to Buffalo Bill. At Ash Hollow you can still see wagon tracks from the pioneers (you really can see them). Chimney Rock and Scottsbluff Monument were signature landscape trail markers for the pioneers. A new museum spans the interstate and is called the Archway. Disney was consulted for technology for the exhibits. It is state of the art and is in the middle of Nebraska in Kearney. It chronicles the history of the pioneers and their travels. It is really cool. If you have seen Lonesome Dove, you know I live at the end of the Texas Trail, in Ogallala. There are a few tourists attractions here, but mostly it is a stopover for the skiers traveling on to Colorado. The nearest amusement park is in Denver, 2 1/2 hours away. Omaha is 5 hours away. Oh, but did I mention that it's a great place to raise kids?

Re: What local attractions near you are worth seeing? PS - I LUV WDW has mentioned some of the places to visit in Mass. I will expand upon that by including the Berkshires, in western Mass. They have the mountains, lakes, theater, dining and shopping. Every season has something to offer here. In the fall the foliage is stunning, summers offer the Boston Pops concerts and baseball at Fenway Park. In spring the Boston Marathon is run every April. In winter you can ski one of the many wonderful mountains in New Hampshire, our neighbor just to the north. We still have pilgrims living at Plymouth Plantation, you can join them for Thanksgiving dinner. In Salem, home of the infamous witch trials they have an awesome witch museum and the House of Seven Gables. You can't visit and not eat a lobster (or "lobstah" as the locals call them). The Cape was mentioned, and just off the coast, a short ferry ride away, are the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. My favorite beach is located in Provincetown, Mass. Also called Ptown. The dunes there are stunningly beautiful. New Bedford has an incredible whaling heritage (think Moby Dick), and there are tons of historic places to see in Boston, Lexington and Concord. And don't forget Six Flags New England in Agawam, Mass. I could keep going, but I think I'll let one of my fellow New Englanders have a turn.

Re: What local attractions near you are worth seeing? OK here goes VT. Bennington, VT has The Bennington Museum with a wonderful display of Grandma Moses paintings as well as many other art and historic exhibits. There is also the Bennington Battle Monument (much like the Washington monument only on a smaller scale) and the Bennington Pottery Factory. North to Manchester with the Equinox Hotel and its outlet shopping. There are the beautiful views from the top of the Mount Equinox toll road and Stratton and Bromley Ski resorts are close by. Proctor has Wilson's Castle. Quechee has a beautiful Gorge and a great Antique mall. Woodstock has the Inn and Resort. The Burlington/Shelburne area has The Shelburne Museum (awesome museum of historical buildings moved to the site including The Steamship Ticonderoga , a lighthouse, trainstation, houses from every era, a schoolhouse, covered bridge and numerous other buildings and exhibits of art and carousel horses, textiles and toys and living history exhibits. Not to be missed you could easily spend 2 days here from open to close. There are hands on exhibits for kids and a carousel. There is also the Ethan Allen Homestead and Lake Champlain and The Vermont Teddy Bear Company factory and tour. Hubbardton has the Hubbardton Battlefield and visitors center. Mt. Independance is another Revolutionary War Site with a museum. There are also the Killington, Okemo and Stowe ski areas. I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of things. Maybe if Brenda drops in she could add..

Re: What local attractions near you are worth seeing? Forti- You don't need anything else to do in Denver when you've got the mountains to visit. We lived in Greeley for two years and in Durango for a year. Mesa Verde is pretty awesome, but I'm partial to the eastern slope and Estes Park. I love Denver's art museum. I live in a small town in OK, about 32,000 but we have plenty to offer. Bartlesville was the world headquarters of Phillips Petroleum until this Conoco merger. You can visit the first oil well. Main attractions would be Woolaroc. Frank Phillips Ranch, Museum and Wildlife Preserve. T^he museum has alsorts of things from shrunken heads to lots of wild west stuff. The Price Toweris Frank Lloys Wrights tallest built skyscraper. It now houses traveling art exhibits. OKMOZART Festival is a 14 day musical event held at our Perfoming Arts Center that has superb accoustics. The festival is world renowned and attracts the talents of Itzak Perlman, Solisti New York Orchestra, Canadian Brass, and Others. I think Branford Marsalis is one of the guests this year. There is also the Tom Mix museum, Prairie Song pioneer village and working ranch and Tulsa is only 45 minutes away for shopping and other tourist attractions. Bartlesville was also selected a few years ago as one of Disney's hometowns and Disney brought in a big parade and celebration with all the characters! Not as much as big cities, but is a town with alot of arts and entertainment. SleepingB

| Re: What local attractions near you are worth seeing? In the wonderful city of MD we have our historic and tourist attraction, our fabulous Inner Harbor and Harborplace. It is a conglomerate of museums, shopping, eateries and historic locations. Fells Point is also a hot spot. Much of Homicide, Life on the Streets was taped here. The cops station is a huge building right on the water. We have a great Aquarium and Science Center along w/ typical tourist traps such as Hard Rock etc. We also have a great zoo, which is in downtown Balto also but not the same location as Harborplace. Along w/ Va and DC above mentioned we also have many historic sites such as Fort McHenry were the Star Spangled Banner was written. We have a cool city. You just hafta know where to look! | Re: What local attractions near you are worth seeing? Wow, fortissimo, you make me miss "home." I grew up on the west side of Denver and loved it. Thirty minutes one direction and I'd be in the heart of downtown. Thirty minutes the other way and I could be in the mountains away from any sign of civilization. Love Colorado! |

Re: What local attractions near you are worth seeing? I moved to the Atlanta area about a year ago but I don't really have any suggestions for things to see because I came from Chicagoland and everything has been a disappointment because of that! (no offense meant to any Atlantians it is just my experience) However we are trying to plan a weekend to Savannah so that would probably be something interesting to do. But I can suggest about a million things to do in Chicago!!! -The City herself-the most beautiful I have seen in the USA -The lakefront -Navy Pier -Lincoln Park Zoo -Brookfield Zoo -Museum of Science and Industry -Field Museum -Shed Aquarium -The Adler Planetarium -Art Institute of Chicago -Grant Park and Buckingham Fountain -Cubs game -Sox Game -Bears Game (unfortunately I can't suggest the Bulls anymore ) As you can tell I could go on and on and still not list everything. It is a wonderful place!!! I can't wait to move back! What a fun post!!!
