| Galveston, Texas I know this isn't the most glamorous place but do any of you vacation here? I live in Tx and have only been one time. We stayed at the Galvestonian and it was sooo relaxing. We had a private beach which I liked. We ate at Fish Tails & Joe's Crab Shack. Just kicked back. That may be our next vacation after WDW. Kinda have to recoupe some of our money before the next big vacation. If any of you go, where have you stayed? What do you like to do when your there? | Re: Galveston, Texas SMG, I've not "vacationed" in Galveston, but I have made several day trips there. (I used to live in SE Texas, about 90 minutes away.) Of course, the beaches and the seafood restaurants are the big draw, but there are plenty of other interesting things to see and do. Moody Gardens is a favorite -- they have several pyramids, each of which has its own educational theme. One contains a rainforest, complete with birds and animals. Another contains a very good aquarium, featuring separate ecosystems from various parts of the oceans around the world (the penguins are great!). They've also got a 3D Imax theatre and other stuff. (They have their own hotel, too. IMHO, it's way overpriced. Stay near the water.) I'm an aviation buff, so I've also spent a lot of time at the Lone Star Flight Museum. They have an outstounding collection of WWII-vintage aircraft in very good condition, and plenty of interesting and informative displays. They occasionally hold air shows and "fly days" where they'll put the planes in the air. Not to be missed. Right up the road is NASA's Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston. This is a great place if you are at all interested in the space program! Space Center Houston is a fascinating place with theaters, shows, exhibits (climb through a real space shuttle!), hands-on displays (land the shuttle in a simulator), and more. Then climb on a tram for a tour of the facilities where the astronauts train and Mission Control. "Houston, we have a problem"? You'll see where it all happens! Hope this helps! | Re: Galveston, Texas Been to Galveston often - live in the DFW area. Have you thought about a cruise that leaves from the Galveston port? There's a "Cruise to Nowhere" from Carnival that is August 17 - 19 (Saturday to Monday) and the price is about $500-600 per couple. Pretty inexpensive getaway when you consider that pays for food, too! Depending on the time of year, you can go on a 4 or 5 day cruise to Mexico. For example, Carnival goes in October for about $400 per person. Not sure about Royal Caribbean's prices. If you decide to stay strictly on land, Moody Gardens, the Strand and Battleship Texas are all must sees. As far as where to stay, look on line for a condo to rent. Better value and convenience. Good luck. |

| Re: Galveston, Texas I think Moody Gardens is a must for our next Galveston vacation. We did stop at the Space Center Houston the last trip to Galveston and the kids LOVED it. |
