Re: Anyone ever been to Hawaii?

Yup. In fact, I've been to Hawaii twice, once at age 12 for a swim meet and then again for our honeymoon.

My favorite place was Pearl Harbor. I can't describe the feeling it gave me.

I have also been to Maui and Kauai. Kauai is by far my favorite island. We took a helicpoter ride over the island which was just amazing.

I'm not a beach person, so I can't give you my favorite beach. However, if you ever go, take a Zodiac boat ride on Kauai along the coast. The boat lets you off in a cove for snorkling.

Re: Anyone ever been to Hawaii?

I suggest a dual island adventure, with Oahu first. Hit the Polynesian Cultural Center, Pearl Harbor, Hanama Bay. Then, go to Maui for the most gorgeous and relaxing time of your life! If you go at the right time of year, you can go out on a whale watch. (Winter Months). Venture up to Haleakula (wear a jacket, it gets chilly!), and if you are really adventurous, you can bike down off the volcano! Enjoy your trip!

Re: Anyone ever been to Hawaii?

Yep, been there, done that. Back in 1983 we spent 9 days on Oahu. We stayed with an aunt of Nancy's. We have only been to Oahu. Pearl Harbor is very neat.

Re: Anyone ever been to Hawaii?

I would definitely recommend Oahu (Honolulu, Waikiki Beach), Kauai and Maui. My first advice is that if you are coming from the East coast you really need two weeks to have the best time (the time difference always kills us the first couple of days).

As mentioned previously, can't miss on Oahu - Pearl Harbor, climbing Diamond Head, snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, the Polynesian Culture center and of course Waikiki Beach.

On Kauai, definitely a helicopter ride, Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of Hawaii), and relaxing on the beaches.

For Maui (my favorite of them all) - sunrise on Haleakala (or even in the daytime), the road to Hana must be experienced at least once, I highly recommend a sailing/snorkeling excursion on Trilogy's catamarans. They are super! We have done the all day trip to Lanai and also the half day trip from Lahaina up the shoreline.

My favorite choice of beach is also on Maui - Kapalua. Voted number one by Doctor Beach and always in the top 5 of best beaches to visit. Waikiki beach, although not one of my favorites, is certainly a don't miss if on Oahu.

Thanks Steve - now you have me dreaming of July 2003 our next trip to Hawaii! What better place to turn the big 4 - 0 !!!!

Re: Anyone ever been to Hawaii?

I've never been, but DH was born there, and one of his brothers lives there. I'll check with them and see what they say.

Re: Anyone ever been to Hawaii?

For those of you who have been able to take advantage of Shades of Green, the Military also has a resort in Hawaii (right on Waikiki Beach) called Hale Koa. It is beautiful and like SOG, you can get a great deal here. It books very quickly.

The Zoo in Honolulu was great too! Of course that may be because I was only 13 years old when I went! I do remember the Polenesian Culture Center being really neat too!

Re: Anyone ever been to Hawaii?

Debe,

The Hale Koa is definately worth it!! You can check out the web site by typing in Hale Koa. Like you, I do not like to fly on long flights...it helps if you can break it down with a stop in CA for a day. We definately want to do it again, but to find a 10 day span that we are both available (you ned at least 10 to 14 days to make it worth the flight) is difficult.

Re: Anyone ever been to Hawaii?

DH had to work there (sounds of aaahhhh), we stayed on Waikiki Beach (fun, but very touristy). Overall, I did not feel overly "safe" as I did a lot of touring on Waikiki on my own and there is a LOT of scams going on. We also went to Kauai for a couple days. All I can say is AWESOME! If you are there in the winter stay on the South side, and in the summer the north. My dad has been to Maui and the Big Island. He raves about both! Enjoy!
