Re: Favorite National Park

Okay, I LOVE to travel. This is by far the most beautiful place I have EVER seen! I must admit, honestly , though, even I was a little afraid that my kids would fall in. If I learn how to use my scanner better, I will try to post some pictures.

We combined this trip with a CA, Las Vegas 10 day jaunt. (Okay, we are the Griswalds! My husband has actually been called Clark! Anyway, we just sort of stayed in the South Rim area. We plan to do this again next year and definately take a guided tour into the Canyon. You simply must see it to believe it! It defies description.

Re: Favorite National Park

We hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon when the girls were 11 & 13.
We have also visited Yellowstone, The BadLands, Arches Ntnl. Park, Bryce Canyon, Devils Tower, Mt Rushmore, Haleakula Volcano on Maui, Little Big Horn...you might say we like those National Parks!

Re: Favorite National Park

Several folks commented on the western parks. Some of the eastern parks are pretty spectacular, too. The Great Smokies, my personal favorite, are lush and beautiful. Acadia is stunning. The Cape Hatteras and Cape Cod National Seashores are a fascinating mix of nature, history, and culture, with beaches thrown in to boot. Mammoth Cave is the longest cave in the world. Then there are all of the battlefields, each with it's own beauty and story. Shennandoah National Park is not quite the Smokies but still nice.

Of the western parks, Yellowstone, together with the Grand Teton NP just down the road, reminded me of God's amusement park. Made up of different "lands" (the hot springs, the geysers, the canyon, etc.) you can spend a week there exploring very different things every day. Carlsbad Caverns are very cool and White Sands is not too far away, maybe a day's drive, and very hot. I went to Bandalier before the big fires so I don't know what it is like now. Loved the Grand Canyon (hiked Bright Angel trail from the South Rim to the bottom and back back in high school). See Sunset Crater Volcano and Montezuma's Castle if you are going to the Grand Canyon. Loved Haleakala (honeymoon on Maui). Saguaro made think of old western movies.

Am I rambling? I think I am. Anyway, love those Smokies.

Re: Favorite National Park

We loved Yellowstone, hoping to go back next year. Also, Rocky Mtn. Nat'l Park is beautiful!!!! You can drive up on top of the mountain ridge (Trail Ridge Road). It is definitely a spectacular view.

In 1999, we visited Royal Gorge, Rocky Mtn., Tetons, Yellowstone, Devils Tower, Mt. Rushmore. And I have to say that after you have seen the beauty and majesty that God has created, the 4 president heads that man created on the mountain just did not compare!

Re: Favorite National Park

I was hoping someone would mention Rocky Mountain NP! Since I grew up in Colorado, it is the one I am most familiar with. I've visited Yellowstone, Yosemite, and several others -- and loved them all -- but Rocky Mountain remains my favorite.

And Michelle, you're right -- Trail Ridge Road is spectacular. It is the highest (in elevation) continuous paved highway in the world -- by contrast, the more well-known road up Pike's Peak doesn't go as high and is unpaved much of the way. Trail Ridge goes well above the timberline and crosses the Continental Divide. The view is indescribable. You feel like you're on the top of the world.
