St. John, USVI

Is anyone familiar with St. John? We have had several people suggest vacationing there for its gorgeous beaches. St. Thomas is one of the stops on the Eastern Caribbean cruise and there are excursions to St. John. I started investigating and it looks like there are several nice beaches. Which would be the least crowded?

Thanks for any info, web sites to look at etc!

Re: St. John, USVI

I've been to the USVI's three times, but only went to St. John one day. In my vast experience (LOL!!) the beaches on St. John were far less crowded. The island is 2/3rds a National Park, and is the most expensive of the three islands. My favorite beach though is Magen's Bay on St. Thomas. It is absolutely gorgeous!! I was there in twice in June and once in October, so that might make a difference.

Enjoy your trip... I'm green with envy!

Re: St. John, USVI

We visited St. John on the Disney cruise last summer. In one word -- PARADISE!!! Go to Cinnamon Bay Beach. It's absolutely the most beautiful place I've ever been and even in the middle of July there were no crowds. We've talked about staying there a week!

Re: St. John, USVI

Tinksmom, thanks for the info. If/when you do a trip directly to St. John we'd love to hear about it. Somebody said it's more expensive a trip that just doing say St. Thomas or St. Croix. We've never cruise before. We usually just fly directly to the destination. At least this way I get to "tryout" St. John and St. Martin!

Bert& Sully,

We won't be going for several years. This summer it's back to WDW for 11 day. Next summer I've promised my DH we'll head to Hawaii. Then I get to go to WDW and the cruise again.

Re: St. John, USVI

St John's is a beautiful place. One of our favorites is Cinnamon Bay Campground right on Cinnamon Bay Beach. We have always camped (yes, it is a platform tent with cots!! However, you can get linens, coolers, etc.) there, and loved it. The campground does now offer some very rustic type cottages if you are not the camping type. Also, on St. John's, is Maho Bay Camp and Concordia Cottages (or camp?...not sure of the correct name). We have never stayed at these other campgrounds, but have heard great things. The Westin on St Johns is very expensive but well worth it as is Caneel Bay. It is definately worth saving your money for a trip!!! We do have several friends who stay on St Thomas (costs less) and then travel back and forth between the islands on the local ferry.
As for web sites, I would try just looking under St Johns USVI. I know you can find out about the campgrounds just by typing in the names. Don't forget to talk with a travel agent...they are usually the experts with the most up to date information. Good Luck with your planning.
