| Southern Coast of Maine DH, DD (8 months old) and I are traveling with DMIL, DFIL, DBIL, DSIL and their DD (13 months old). We are staying at Lafayette's Ocean Front Resort in Wells. We've been to this area before (particulary Kittery and Portsmouth NH with a drive up the coast). Looking for suggestions or wisdom from those who have visited (or live in the area). Particularly of interest are great places to have some good seafood dinners and any information about tourist attractions. We plan to do the regular beach thing as it is right outside our door and the hotel pool and some shopping. Anyone been to York's Wild Kingdom? Any info would be appreciated and thank-you in advance. |

| Re: Southern Coast of Maine Seeing you've already been to Kittery, you may want to take a ride to Freeport (just north of Portland), home of LL Bean and lots of other shopping. If you do end up in Kittery, we really like the Weathervane restaurant (they are a chain). Their web site is Weathervane Seafood Hopefully someone else will have more info for you on the Wells area. | Re: Southern Coast of Maine DH spent lots of summers in the area (he's from MA originally). He suggests Lord's - it's a lobster house; The Ogunquit Playhouse does summerstock theatre. Old Orchard Beach is a wonderful French-Canadian Beach...but the water is a little on the cold side - about 62 or 64. There's lots of good restaurants in Portland. There are also short cruises at Casco Bay. There is a ferry to Nova Scotia from Portland if you have enough time (and money). If you're not into the ocean; and if you prefer lakes Sebago is DH's favorite. Sebago Lake is 45 minutes or so inland from Portland; easy to find on any map. It is a bit of a drive from the Portland area, but well worth it if you have the time (four hours from Portland) is Bar Harbor. Arcadia National Park is there as well. |
