Summer vacation dilemma My lovely husband- whose real name is John but I affectionately call Muffin-and I are brawling about where to go this summer on vacation! He wants to go down the shore, as in New Jersey. This is one of the most expensive vacations, in my opinion, that we go on and the least worth it! It will cost us $2,500 just to stay in someone's house for a week! I hate doing this for several reasons: I DO NOT WANT TO COOK ON VACATION! , I DO NOT WANT TO CLEAN SOMEONE ELSE'S HOUSE ON VACATION, I DO NOT WANT MY NUTTY CHILDREN DESTROYING SOMEONE ELSE'S PROPERTY ON VACATION............I can give you more reasons if you want me to. Anyway, besides the expense and the stress, the boardwalk costs a fortune when you have four teenagers and even though I love the beach and riding bikes on the boardwalk, it does not take a week to do this. It just seems like we can have a much nicer vacation for the money we will spend to go to somplace we can do in a day trip ( maybe even a couple of days)! Now, I am trying like mad to come up with something else that looks much better for the money. I figure this vacation would honestly cost about $4,000 for the week. Surely, there must be a better value out there for six people! Any suggestions? Thanks Tara

Re: Summer vacation dilemma I agree with you and thankfully Susan and I are in agreement - pamper us on vacation, no cooking or cleaning for us! So you know what I HAVE to say, Tara...Disney World! Seriously, though, if you want a beach destination have you considered a resort where you can dine out and have housekeeping?!?

Re: Summer vacation dilemma I don't think there is a way to get DW down to $4,000 for us! It will cost over $1,000 just for passes! Believe me, I have been trying to work this out. What I AM finding is that there might be a way to do California or Vegas! Either one of these would be cool and the airfares from PIA are in the right range...........we'll see. I am very goal oriented! Tara

Re: Summer vacation dilemma Tara, seriously, how about Disneyland - Southern CA? You can do Magic Kingdom and California Adventure I bet for well under a grand for 6 ppl - they have a 3 day hopper for around $100 (yes, I've been checking). And you could stay at the Grand Californian - I'm dying to stay there! Just a thought - I bet Jean can help!

Re: Summer vacation dilemma Tara, I totally agree with you. I love the beach, but I'm way past renting beach houses. I don't think it's a vacation if I have to make the beds & we eat in. Plus I live 30 minutes from the Jersey Shore so I can go anytime we want. We actually had this same dilemna this year. DH wanted to go to WDW; I wanted a "vegging" vacation, especially after 9/11. We were set to go to the Outer Banks. I had found a condo w/maid service in Corolla Light that was $1350 for the week. But then when we went to book it, fees et.al made the real price $1850. Too much money when we could stay at WDW for 1/2 that at All Stars (I compare all vacations to WDW!) Then we got the postcard for $84/night for moderates and voila...we'll be at PO-R in 16 days. How about a condo in Myrtle Beach? They're relatively inexpensive.

| Re: Summer vacation dilemma Does she do CA as well? I thought she only did DW? My kids LOVE the Universal out there!! It is a little different. Since there is no IOA, the main park has a few more of the cooler rides like Jurassic Park. You guys should get out there. I like the whole campy Hollywood scene as well and we always have a few great meals with Muffin's cousins..........hmmmm, can you tell I am leaning in this direction? | Re: Summer vacation dilemma Robbi, That is a good idea, too! Myrtle Beach is pretty nice. Thanks! There's another avenue to check out. The more alternates I have, the better! Tara |

Re: Summer vacation dilemma Tara, if you want a beach vacation, check out Daytona Beach, FL. We've stayed there many times and like the beach. We like to fish there too. The hotel rooms at Daytona are much more reasonable than other beaches because there are so many hotels and resorts there--more competition.

Re: Summer vacation dilemma Thanks, Michelle! I really think I will be able to talk John into going to California! The airfare, right now, for a straight flight would be 241.50 a piece. This is a GREAT fare! I am now going to the DL website to see what I can put together! Tara
