Door County

Door County WI is one of DH and my favorite places to go for a long weekend. We usually stay at a place called "Wagon Trail Resort" Beautiful place, nice pool, lake view and all that.
We want to go again this October but have actually only stayed at that one resort, and are open to try another place. Anyone else have any ideas of other places to stay..It can be anywhere, egg harbor or whereever in Door County.

Thanks
Debbie

Re: Door County

Ok, I'm a resident Door County expert! Been there so many times, I've lost count. In fact DH and I honeymooned there. We stayed at The Ephraim Inn, in Ephraim for that. Wonderful B&B with a great breakfast. They have no pool, and only regular antennae on the TV, but we never watched TV, so that didn't bother us. It is right on the harbor. This was my all time favorite place to stay.

A few others we have liked in the past...
The Ephraim Inn, Ephraim - just reiterating how much we love this place. Great breakfast.

Bay Breeze Resort, Ephraim - Adorable rooms, with fireplaces. Very nice outdoor pool. Overlooks harbor.

Bay Point Inn, Egg Harbor - Very beautiful views on a bluff overlooking the bay. The rooms are very pretty, and have jacuzzi's. Outdoor pool.

Egg Harbor Lodge, Egg Harbor - Nice place, with beautiful view (next door to Bay Point). Outdoor pool. Not my favorite, but it is nice.

Nordic Lodge, Sister Bay - Very cozy lodge. No waterview (you can see it through the trees in a distance from your balcony, which every room has), but the people working here are wonderful. Indoor pool, which is great.

Country House Resort, Sister Bay - Very nice resort, and can see the water in a distance from your room, behind some trees. There's a trail you can walk which leads to the bay. Great outdoor pool and hot tub. We stayed when it was chilly out...they give you bathrobes, so you can go in the hot tub, and be able to keep warm while walking back to your room.

For the places we either thought were so-so or just didn't care for...
The Landmark, Egg Harbor - The first three or so times we stayed here, we loved it because of the views of Green Bay, and also the pools (a few outdoor, one indoor). Service fell the last couple of times (rooms weren't that clean), and it is rather large.

Settlement Courtyard Inn, Fish Creek - The rooms were very nice here, with picnic tables and all, but it is out in the middle of nowhere, with no views. And no pool either. Would be a great place if you aren't interested in walking anywhere or don't use a pool.

There is one other in Sister Bay my sister's were disappointed with. I will find out from them which one this was.

Hope this helps. Do you want any info on restaurants? I just LOVE Door County.

Re: Door County

Wow, GREAT info! You must love Door County too.

We want to stay where they have an indoor pool (going in October).

Wagon Trail Resort is in Elison bay (or Sister bay) I get them mixed up. We loved it there but thought we would try somewhere else.

Thank You so much for all the great Info! Very Helpful

Re: Door County

Oh man, I love Door County! We used to go every year at Labor Day when I was still living in Chicago. When DH and I decided to have our wedding in Chicago, I mentioned DC for our honeymoon. He always wondered about it since I'm constantly going on and on about it. He fell in love with it too!

We've never stayed at Wagon Trail, but always make a trip there...have to visit Grandma's Swedish Bakery. It's in Rowley's Bay, just across the peninsula from Ellison Bay. Very quiet and serene that way. I always think it's in Ellison Bay too.

Ok, since you're looking for an indoor pool, that pretty much leaves out everything I've mentioned. Nah, you do have Nordic Lodge in Sister Bay still, which I just love. The only downside, honestly, is no waterview. But like I said, you can see the bay through the trees from your balcony. We really did love it here. It is so cozy, and we loved the indoor pool. Beautiful wood views. If having an outstanding waterview is what you want this place would definitely be out though. Oh, and it's not within walking distance of town.

The Landmark in Egg Harbor used to be a great choice, and maybe we just had a string of bad luck. We always did enjoy it. And the views are gorgeous. You'll have to ask for a waterview here, as there are several to choose from. If I remember correctly, the indoor pool was housed in a main area, so you had to walk or drive from the condo you are staying in. This place is big. Might be a drawback. We used the outdoor pools here, only the indoor once.

The rest I'm listing are a few places we have looked at and they seem nice. All have indoor pools also. I'll try and give you an idea of where they are located.

Applecreek Resort in Fish Creek. It's at the top of the hill as you are heading north out of Fish Creek on 42. It's across from the high school/DC auditorium. It looks cute, and new. No waterview.

Homestead Suites, also in Fish Creek, is at the entrance of Peninsula State Park. Looks very nice, but not much of a view.

Little Sweden is between Egg Harbor and Fish Creek on 42 (address is Fish Creek, I believe). No view of the water, but in the back section, there may be some wooded areas. This is a timeshare and condo place, so not sure what the pressure to purchase is. DH and I checked it out on our honeymoon, and the condo's are extrememly nice. They are townhomes, really, rather than apt. style. The pool area was large. Would have to walk or drive to it, depending on how far away from the main area you are. You can't walk to any shops other than their own.

Pine Grove in Ephraim looks nice. It's on the north side of town, within walking distance of everything. I've always said I've wanted to stay here, but never have. It appears all the rooms have balconies which overlook the harbor. The indoor pool is right at the front, so it has an awesome view of the harbor with large, picture windows.

The Waterbury in Ephraim is north of town on 42. Again, no waterview here, but looks nice and has some little shops nearby.

Somerset in Ephraim is the same as Waterbury. Not sure how close they are to each other.

The Church Hill Inn in Sister Bay is at the top of the hill on 42, just south of town. It is across from the cute little mall with the Piggly Wiggly. Looks very nice, but absolutely no view!

Oh, I remember the place my sisters stayed at. Hotel du Nord in Sister Bay. They said they may have liked it had they stayed in the lodge, but they chose a cottage instead, and really didn't like it.

One other place, which may actually not be there any longer, that I've heard negative things about is the Beowulf Lodge in Fish Creek. My mom has a good friend who lives in Egg Harbor and she says this place just has a bad reputation. I remember seeing it for sale at one time, but still being operated.

Hope this helps! Do you guys like the Fish Boils? DH and I don't eat seafood, but loved the chicken at The Viking. They do fish boils through October. The rest of my family eat fish, and they all love this place. My mom also likes White Gull Inn and a little cafe in Egg Harbor (would have to get the name of it from her) for fish boils.

Do you have any good tips for us we can use on our next trip there (which hopefully will be soon)?

Re: Door County

You're the Door County expert indeed. We love it there too. We rented a cabin on the lake once and it was nice but boring for my DS with no pool. We are not real big on the fish boils but have tried them. I am big on the swedish bakery When I was pregnant with DD, A chocolate Eclair from there was very necessary

When you do plan to go back to Door County?

Re: Door County

No plans yet to go back, but DH and I would like to go maybe next year. I've always wanted to do a winter trip up there, and try cross country skiing.

I admit I don't like fish boils for the fish, but just love the casualness of The Viking. And their fried chicken is awesome.

Have you tried Not Yet Licked for the frozen custard? Between that and the Swedish Bakery, it's a wonder I don't have to be carted out! Have you been to Al Johnson's? I love the lingonberries there, and always bring some back. In fact, I still have a jar stored away!

Have you been to Cave Point Park? This is one of my favorite places to visit. The past few times we've been, there hasn't been much of a chance to get down near the caves, but used to climb down around them years ago.

Re: Door County

I don't think we've tried the places you mention. Also have not been to Cave Park either. We will have to check that out though.

I just love all those little shops and that clock store is awesome.

Re: Door County

Debbie...I remembered a few more places, both in Ephraim, that look nice and have indoor pools.

Ephraim Shores Motel. Right across the street from the harbor, and looks very cute. They have a restaurant, Second Story Restaurant (as you can tell on the second floor!), that is awesome. Great view of the harbor, and Italian Beef sandwiches to die for. DH and I ate here for lunch once on our honeymoon, and honestly felt it was one of the best meals we had.

Heading north on 42, it is just around the bend past the old library in Ephraim.

The other place is a B&B, Eagle Harbor Inn. It is on 42 just as you are coming into Ephraim's downtown heading north. I've always thought this looks very quaint. They look like they cater to romance, but really do have a knack for children. A little sand/play area for them. I believe along with the pool, there is a fitness room.

Their breakfast is supposed to be awesome, although I still think The Ephraim Inn has the best.

You definitely have to check out Cave Point Park. So beautiful, especially on windy days when the waves from Lake Michigan are crashing in.

Re: Door County

I have never heard of Door County. Whereabouts in WI is it located? After reading all of your posts, I have become interested in knowing more. It sounds like such a charming place.

Re: Door County

It is charming and beautiful. Door County is the peninsula in the Eastern part of the state that jets out between Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Here's a link to the Chamber of Commerce website . This has some great information on the area. You can also order a free vacation guide from here. They put one out every year and it has wonderful information and beautiful pictures. One downside to this...there are so many wonderful places to stay in DC, not all of them could possibly be listed. But what they do list is great!

Hope this helps.
