Re: Any Calgary/ Edmonton Fans Out There?

My brother married an "Edmontonian" several years ago. We visited both Edmonton and Calgary. Calgary was my favorite of the 2. It's a "new", clean city! I had no idea how popular the whole rodeo thing is there! (My DH bought a pair of cowboy boots at the Alberta Boot co....even got a tour of the "factory" from the owner...very cool!)
If you head that way, you MUST go to Banff and Jasper!! Some of the most beautiful scenery ever!!!

I would really love to go there, I hear the Stampede activities, (even if you don't attend the rodeo) are wonderful! I also hear the Edmonton Mall is Amazing!

Re: Any Calgary/ Edmonton Fans Out There?

Ohhhh...I forgot about the mall! Like nothing we have in Frederick!!! It is HUGE!!! It has a waterpark inside it as well as an amusement park and many other unbelievable "extras"!!! We just wandered the place for several hours...never even entered the shops (which are mainly "typical" mall shops)! -- Now that's an amazing feat for me!!!

Re: Any Calgary/ Edmonton Fans Out There?

Bring your camera to Calgary (Cowtown to us Western Canadians)cuz it's a beautiful city. They are very much into the cowboy thing. You'll see just as many people in cowboy hats and boots as you will in suits and ties. (You may even see people that mix and match those) I LOVE the Calgary Zoo. It's so beautiful! And the view from the Calgary Tower is pretty awesome. Take a stroll down the path by the Bow River cuz that's pretty too. There is a pedestrian mall downtown with some funky shops and many interesting/humourous cow statues to snap photos of. Of course the suburb areas have some good sized malls with your basic shopping. I've never been to the Stampede but everyone I've ever talked to who've been say that it's fun. And a drive to Banff from Calgary is (I think) a about an hour. Jasper is actually closer to Edmonton. Another place I would recommend that is maybe a 1 1/2 hour drive from Calgary is Drumheller. If you have kids that are into dinosaurs this is THE place to be. The Drumheller Badlands are eerily beautiful and the Dinosaur museum is fascinating.

Edmonton has The Mall. (That's what my sister who lives in Edmonton calls it - all the other malls get called by their real names but the West Edmonton Mall <W.E.M.> needs no other name). It has a water park complete with waves and bungy diving (the last time I was there anyway). There is a submarine ride similar to the one that used to be in Disneyland (did WDW have one too?) The joke in Canada is that the W.E.M. has a larger fleet of subs than the Canadian military! There's a "Bourbon Street" area, an indoor mini golf course modelled after Pebble Beach, and a sailing ship docked in an indoor lagoon (don't know why). There is a huge indoor amusement park with a corkscrew rollercoaster, a tower drop ride and much, much more. Want to go ice skating in July, no problem they have a skating rink too! Plus they have a hotel with themed rooms if you want to sleep in the back of a pickup truck or perhaps a tropical Hawaiian paradise! A lot of people just go to Edmonton for The Mall. But there are other things to do - I really enjoy the Fort Edmonton Park because it's one of those historical parks where the guides are dressed in costume and act like they live there in that time period. It takes you right through from the time when the white settlers came and their dealings with the Native Indians up to about the 1920's or 30's. Edmonton is the capitol of Alberta so it's a hustling and bustling place. Oh, yeah they have a racing go cart place that my DH really loves. Edmonton's answer to the Calgary Stampede is Klondike Days.
