DVC at Hilton Head. . .any suggestions?

We just got off the wait list for the DVC at Hilton Head in September. I'm looking forward to just laying on the beach or at the pool, but DH will have enough of that by day 2. He refuses to play golf by himself (ie without a friend) so he wouldn't even take his clubs with him.

Any vacation club members out there who have been to Hilton Head? Any suggestions on things to do, places to eat, etc? I am considering a day trip to Savannah, GA.

Your expert advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: DVC at Hilton Head. . .any suggestions?

We went to HHI last August and had a great time! I would definitely suggest a trip to Savannah. It is a beautiful city with a lot of history. We did the Old Town Trolley Tour (approximately $22 for an all day pass) and it was a wonderful way to see the historic district and find out what is there.

As far as HHI itself, there are a lot of little shops scattered throughout the island at the various plantations. If you like shopping, you would definitely enjoy yourself. There are also a couple of outlet malls located off the main highway through the island.

One morning we rented bikes and went biking on the beach (we stayed at the Westin resort which is right on the ocean). There are bike paths all over the island as well for recreational biking. Another fun thing to do is tour the Harbor Town Lighthouse. You can walk the stairs to the top and you then have a gorgeous view of HHI and the surrounding salt marshes. Be sure to bring your camera!

As far as restaurants, we enjoyed a casual low-key seafood restaurant right on the main highway through the island called "Crabby Nicks." It was fairly reasonable as far as prices and the food was great. Then there is the Salty Dog Cafe in South Beach Marina which was a lot of fun. I enjoyed having hush puppies with my sandwich for lunch. There is an adjoining gift shop with a lot of fun items. In Shelter Cove there is a very good Mexican restaurant--I don't recall the name but it is rated one of the best in the area.

I hope this helps you out! If you have any additional questions, feel free to e-mail me!

Re: DVC at Hilton Head. . .any suggestions?

Thanks for the info. As we live in beach/resort community ourselves we know that the best places to eat/things to do come from the locals and/or frequent visitors.

I definetely want to go to Savannah for a day. Thanks for the tip about the tour.

Re: DVC at Hilton Head. . .any suggestions?

When we go to HHI (which is at least once a year), we rent bikes for the whole week and explore the island in the mornings and use the afternoons for beach and pool relaxation.

There will be a list of things to each day that the resort puts together...and you could choose to do some of those. Shelter Cove has a marina where you can charter a boat for fishing. There are also many outdoor groups that offer things like Dophin boat tours, kayaking, canoeing, parasailing....

When you get to the island, you'll find that most stores and your resort will probably have Island Guides (advertising booklets) that will give you what's going on while you are there and ideas for all sorts of things to do.

Have fun....next to WDW, HHI is my favorite vacation place in the world (so far). -HiddenMickey

Re: DVC at Hilton Head. . .any suggestions?

I am not a DVC member -- but I have stayed at Disney's Hilton Head, and I LOVED it! It is such a GREAT place!
There are sooo many cute shops to poke around in, and there is mini-golf, and the beach, and the outlets... so much fun!
Savannah is a must, as well. Make sure to eat at Mrs. Wilke's Boarding House. Southern food at it's best. I must also recommend reading "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" before your trip to Savannah. Then you can see the sights mentioned in the book -- like Mrs. Wilke's!
If you want any additional information, just ask. I loved Hilton Head and Savannah so much that I hope to relocate there some day!

A day trip to Savannah is a must if you are visiting Hilton Head! I went to college in Statesboro, GA which is 45 min from Savannah and my cousin lives there. Defintely take the tours! They are a good way to see the historic sites of the city. I also recommend reading "Midnight" it is so full of history and intrigue. It is much better than the movie. River Street is not to be missed for evening entertainment. Have a great trip!!
