Traveling with a 4 year old.

I have a question for anyone to help with. My airline reservations are with Delta. Do I need to bring a car seat for my 4 year old. She no longer is in them, but does require a booster seat in the car. I know Delta does not allow for boosters on their planes. Would it be safe to assume that as I bought a ticket for her own seat, she will do just fine with out any kind of special seat? Not sure what I should do? I know that I don't want to have to go and buy a special carseat just for the airplane. Can you help?

Re: Traveling with a 4 year old.

This is not variable with different airlines - all airlines have to follow FAA regulations. It is the FAA that prohibits boosters.

For children two and over, the child must have his/her own seat on the plane, but car seats are not required - just the opposite - the FAA prefers use of the regular lap belts, only. The FAA feels that the design of airline seats is such that boosters and car seats can interfere with the safety of the airline seat.

At your option, you can bring a seat for your child, but it has to be FAA approved (look on the label). Safety seats large enough to hold older children, though, aren't likely to fit in the standard coach class seat (26" wide is usually the maximum that will fit). Further, there may be a real problem with leg room for the child - even our toddler is able to kick the back of the seat in front of him when the passenger in front reclines his/her seat, since the child's legs are elevated.

Re: Traveling with a 4 year old.

My son is 4 as well and we do not use a car or booster seat on the plane. When we rent a car and need a seat we will check his booster seat as lugguage and just pick it up with the bags. Hope you have a great trip

Re: Traveling with a 4 year old.

Thanks Dave, I tried emailing Delta to try and find out and I got the usual answer, to go the their website and look at their regulations. I do have to say that they their website was not very clear either. Thanks for the clarification you put my mind at ease. Have a great Thanksgiving!!
