airline ticket question

Here's a weird one:
My dad is coming down to visit me this weekend, and last week found out he needs to be in Denver on business on Monday am. At first I thought he was going to cancel on me (and after I got the weekend off ), but what he wanted to do was change his flight on Sunday from MCO to PHL to MCO to Denver. Well, we forgot he booked with Airtran....the layovers are hours if he elects to change his ticket.
I think he decided to purchase a new ticket from MCO to Denver, and then return to PHL when he is done with business. Would he be able to "cancel" the 2nd half of his ticket and get some kind of credit, or is it a "too bad, so sad?" I am assuming that his company is paying for the new tickets, so he's not exactly losing....but if he could get a credit for that unused return ticket, I would surly use it in the future (either for one of them to come down or me to go home).

thoughts? Thanks!

Depends on what type of ticket he purchased (full fare, refundable??), but sounds like he most likely bought a discounted (non-refundable, not full-fare) ticket. If that is the case, he will not be able to get credit for any unused portion.

But my rule of thumb is to always call and ask.

On tickets other than full fare, once you board the aircraft the ticket is "used". No refund, no credit, no sympathy, no mercy.
