How to upgrade to first class

Can you upgrade to first class at the airport for less than full price? How do you do this?

That depends on a few factors - availability; the airline and the type of ticket you have are the biggest factors.

The 'how' also depends - if you're a frequent traveler with that airline, you might be able to use your miles to upgrade; airline credit cards are another source; cash/credit can also be used.

When you fly can also impact your chances. Don't fly early mornings / late afternoon (especially Monday and Friday) when the planes are going to be chock-full of business people. Flying midweek, mid-day may mean more open first class seats.

Best way is to simply ask if there are any upgrades available. AirTran offers upgrade seating in it's Business Class starting at $40 (depending on flight range). You can upgrade at the ticket counter or the gate but you're better off asking at the counter.

Price will vary - you'll have to know if it's a good deal or not and be ready to pay right then and there for the upgrade.

When I was an Aadvantage Platinum member, I would get upgraded quite frequently for free. As a Gold member, I can pay a small fee for segment upgrades. A segment is 500 miles. So Austin to Indy would be something like 3 segments. Actually, 4, since it would be either AUS to DFW and DFW to IND or AUS to ORD and ORD to IND.

With load factors running in the upper 80s it may be hard to get an upgrade at all. Our AUS to DFW leg next Monday is sold out in first class, and has been for at least a month. Our DFW to Maui leg has been sold out for about 5 months.

But I booked in June using miles.
