Time of year to go

We are planning to go to WDW next December 1-11. I have read in a lot of books, etc that this is a great time to go. However, I just talked to my friend who went this year at that time and she said it was more crowded than she expected. The Pop Warner superbowl and dance/cheer competitions made it busier. My question is would it be better to try to go in early January instead? We are excited about being there at Christmas time, but definitely want to avoid HUGE crowds, (all things considered of course).
