Scented Sensory Souveniers

Posted 07-28-2009 at 09:54 AM by Sandra Bostwick
When I raved about the delicious coffee, Katey, the energetic woman who works at the Dove Creek Lodge, offered me a few bags to bring home.

The coffee, Seattle's Best brand, has a unique taste and smell. I brewed a pot this morning and, somehow, was whisked back in my memory to my little room with the marina view balcony before I even took a sip.

I noticed last night, as I applied moisturizer from a little bottle I'd saved from a different hotel stay, that my mind wandered back to that time. I breathed in the unique scent which was created specially for that spa-themed resort, and my awareness traveled there, even if for just a moment.

I have a whole drawer full of little soaps and lotions that remind me of places I'd enjoyed. I love the fresh scent of Disney's Aquatics line. The Dolphin uses warm vanilla sugar for bath soaps and coconut-lime verbena for facial. The Mirage in Vegas uses an oatmeal soap, which I thought was surprisingly wholesome for Vegas. THe Delta Queen Steamboat Company used Lord & Mayfair products before they dissolved some time after Hurricane Katrina. I saved quite a few of those and am sad to say they are starting to lose their scent.

The sense of smell is one of the strongest triggers for memory.

Do you collect any sensory souveniers with a scent that reminds you of your travels when you are back home? What are your favorites?

I can't think of any, but I did want to comment on the Delta Queen boats - we used to live in Natchez, and that was one of the Queens' stops along the river. We used to love seeing the boats in dock. The small business owners downtown used to love it, too, because that meant more business for them!

I believe we stopped in Natchez when I worked on the Mississippi Queen!

Very cool! We enjoyed living there. Jay was born there, I lived there from the time we got married in '97 until we moved to Clinton in '03. If it weren't for practically all their industries closing (Jay's line of work) we would probably still be there.

When I was there, it seemed alot of the stops along the Mississippi River were having difficulties, and that was BEFORE the bubble burst and left us with this big mess that we have now!

Yeah, it was a slow but steady decline for Natchez. First one plant would close and then another. Jay enjoys computer drafting, and for a while had a part-time job with an architect. But that's the problem with cad - too many short-term projects. So when Nissan announced they were opening a plant in MS, that gathered his full attention. So far they have done a good job of sticking to their promise of not having any layoffs. They've had to do some cutbacks, but not too severe considering their payscale, and they've gotten rid of all the temporary employees. But still no layoffs, and it looks like their business is starting to pick back up a little, so perhaps the worst is behind us. For Natchez, though, it is a tourism-based town and not much else. So when people aren't traveling they definitely suffer.
