We have a Kodak C340 P&S and used the auto setting for most, if not all, of our food photos. I don't have access to them now, but I can add images later.

I use a Kodak 712IS. I just aim the camera at the food and the camera and flash seem to adjust fine!

Most times I just get back away from the food, and set the flash to auto. Sometimes I put the camera into macro/close-up mode and leave the flash on auto.

I usually leave the camera on auto - and either take the photo with the flash or without. I check the shot to see which works better.
