| Copyright I searched this forum and could not find anything on this particular topic. When I went to a festival last month, one of the organizers asked me to send him the photos I took. I want to do this, but I also want to protect my rights and be compensated if these photos are published. Is there a form or something I should get him to sign? I am OK with letting the festival organization use them gratis to promote the festival itself, but I don't want to be cheated either. I will probably also post them here (via photobucket) at least, as part of a TR. I am not a professional photog, obviously. Does any have advice on this? Thank you in advance.

| you most definitely own the copyright and you can and should have him sign a contract with you on how he is to use them.

| If you want to let the festival use the photos free to promote the event, say on their web site, have then them agree to a one-time use. Then they will have to contact you about any other uses and you decide if they can use them and how much you want to be paid. If they are for the festival's web site, send them low-res photos, no more than 72 dpi. This way, if they do download and try to print the photos, they will be poor quality, not fit for printing. |

| You can find many examples of agreements by Googling a phrase like "photography copyright license." Nolo, which publishes all sorts of layman's legal information, has a section on their site dedicated to copyrights and art. For more "lawyerly" info, try IVAN HOFFMAN, B.A., J.D. Attorney At Law Also, look for sites run by associations of photographers. You may need to be a member to take advantage of the info you seek, but not always.
