| traveling with gear You all sound like you travel with photo gear. Can we put the small tripod in our carry-on since we will be going to the parks before our checked luggage catches up with us? Do we just put it in a separate bin from the get-go or will it pass through the machine in the carry-on without incident?

| I travel with a monopod and/or a small tripod in my carry on all the time. I just pack them near the top for easy access if I get an overzealous inspector. Cheers Craig

| I travel with my camera gear 100% with me at all times. Especially while on the plane... I never check my gear. Yes you can pack a small tripod in your carry on.

| all camera gear goes in my carry on if it will fit... I have a new (cheap!) tripod that collapses down and fits in my carry on... and IF I have room for it I will pack it with me as I'll be in the same situation you are...

| It is a cheap but sturdy tripod that folds down very small. Sounds like the carry on will be fine for it. DBF doesn't put much in his carry on so there will be plenty of room.

| Alternately, if there's a male passenger in your party ... hand the tripod to them, as their "personal item" (since the guys won't be carrying purses). That's what I plan on, myself: Tripod as personal item, everything else in the carry-on. ^_^ |

| We have a backpack we carry-on, and strap the tripod to the side, with the legs tucked into the beverage pocket. We just put it through the xray machine with the tripod attached, and have never been asked to remove it. There are camera bags and camera backpacks that have a tripod attachment feature that works the same way, but our plain old day pack works just as well.
