Photoshop 6.0 help!

I got myself a new laptop with photoshop 6.0 and have no clue how to do anything! I can't do much besides the "quick fix" but that isn't enough sometimes and i want more "control" in my editing.... how do i use this program?

I am about ready to just download Picasa and call it a day! I'm not pleased with the results i'm getting... i wanted to do stuff like just color my DD's eyes and leave the rest of the photo B&W but i can't get past simple editing... help!

Wow...that's a really big question! I've been in marketing and graphic design for 15 years and I still don't know all the tricks to Photoshop!

You may want to invest in a book to help you get started. Photoshop can do SOOOO much, but I'm not sure even where to begin to help you figure out what you are wanting to do. It sounds like you may need a tutorial to just help you figure out all the different tools.

I don't know if this will make any sense, but if you are having troubles with red eye (wanting to color your daughter's eyes), I usually use the magic wand tool and select the red spot in the eyes, with the wand setting set to about 5 or 10, then I feather the selection. I make sure a dark color (usually a dark grey, not black) is my background color and then delete the selection. Using a dark grey instead of black and feathering the selection keeps the eyes from looking "empty." I will also sometimes go in with a very small paintbrush tool and add a little light reflection to add a little life to the eyes. But I'm afraid that unless you have a little more understanding of Photoshop, everything I've just said may be jibberish!

Good luck! I hope someone else out there can give you a better answer! I am much better at *showing* how to use Photoshop than telling!

If you're comfortable with another program, I would recommend you use it.

You can color your daughters eyes in a black and white picture by using layers. But the method is really hard to explain quickly...

There are many great books out there, and the program itself has a good help file.

There are also a number of groups on the various nets for photoshop users, I used to belong to 3 on yahoogroups...

I've found Photoshop has a pretty steep learning curve too. When I have time I'll muddle through and get some great results. However, when I have a lot of images to process, like the 1600 I had to do last week, I break out the old faithful MS Digital Image Pro. It's not as robust as CS3 but it does the basics very well with little overhead. In other words, use what your comfortable with and play with the new stuff until your comfort level increases.

Cheers
Craig
