| Memory Cards and Airport Security I've played on PassPorter for a couple of years now and just found this section. Wow! I have a question about memory cards. I was recently told that you should not keep them in your camera to go through security. The ideal way is to remove them, show them to the person at security and possibly carry them through with you as you pass through the security thing. Any thoughts?

| Your memory cards will be fine. If you really want to be safe, back up your memory cards on CD or on a computer and then go. But you really shouldn't worry.

The x-ray scanners used on carry-on bags, which your camera gear will go through as you pass the security checkpoint, will not harm any type of electronics - cameras, computers, PDAs, music players, phones, or any type of memory card, CD, DVD, or floppy disk. Those scanners can harm photographic film, which is why it's best to take the film out of your film cameras and have it hand-inspected instead of putting it through the x-ray scanner. Few people fly with film these days, so it's not a terribly big concern, but just in case, here is my web page on the subject of Flying with Film Rest assured that your memory card will be perfectly safe in your digital camera as it passes through the x-ray scanner. | |
