Angry Scanner Issues!!! ARRRGH!!!!!

Just when I thought my technical problems couldn't get any worse...
I have a Hewlett Packard Scan Jet 4200C flatbed scanner which I NEED to work for my own mental health. I have hooked it up to my family's Dell laptop that runs on Windows XP. I tried it on my computer (which runs on Vista), and the troubleshooting box-popup-thing said it would run on XP. Now it says it won't run because of the Windows 2000. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Can anybody give me a quick fix (or at least a fix) besides getting a new scanner?
Thankya!!!!!!!

I have a 4600, and it refuses to run on a Dell... It runs and loads on my HP, and all of my home brews...

Part of the problem we found with the Dell is that all the drivers/supporting files are loaded into the same directory for all HP products, printers and scanners.

HP has not released an update for VISTA for the 4200, and I don't think they will. You can try uninstalling the 4200, deleting the directories it created, and rebooting. Check HP's site for any updated drivers/programs for the 4200 and try again. If you have other HP products installed, and are not using them or no longer have them, delete them using the add/remove programs link in your control panel...

That's about all the help I can give. We never did get the 4600 to work on Jan's Dell with XP...

The latest XP driver that is available from HP for your scanner was created February, 2002 and there is no support for Vista. There are actually drivers for Windows 98. That would indicate that it was probably developed as early as 1998, which is quite ancient in "computer years". I'm not sure what model laptop you're trying to install it on. If it's a recent model you're likely SOL. Do yourself a favor and donate the scanner and pick yourself up a new one and save lots of headaches.

Cheers
Craig

I checked with my computer geek hubby and he said if you want to see for sure check the Hewlett Packard website, HP United States - Computers, Laptops, Servers, Printers & more to see if your computer has the necessary drivers for the scanner. We just purchased a new HP printer/copier/scanner at Sam's for a good deal as it was a former display model. It's the first time we've not really had problems.
