| Opinion on 'close-up lenses' Hi everyone! We recently purchased our first DSLR and are just in the very beginning of learning how to use it. So far, we've pretty much done everything on auto but we are loving the pictures it is taking! We really want to be able to capture some neat close-up detail pictures this year for our trip and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on whether or not the 'close-up lenses' will help us accomplish this? We currently have the standard lense that came with our Canon XS (i believe it is something like 18-55mm) and we also purchased a 75-300mm lense. These are the close-up attachments i'm currently looking at: Amazon.com: Opteka 58mm Close-Up Set (+1, +2, and +4) with 10x Macro Lens for Canon EOS Film & Digital SLR: Electronics Do you think these would be a good purchase?? Thanks in advance for your help! Melissa

| For the current $19.95 price, it's pretty much a case of, "Why not?" As the Amazon reviews indicate, add-on lenses of this sort are not an easy-to-use or high quality solution. However, it's better wasting $19.95 than spending big money on a third "prime" lens and finding out you never use it. However, if you decide you like this kind of photography, you'll want a proper macro lens (rather than an add-on). Each photographer develops his/her own style. Personally, my old Nikon 55mm macro lens for my 1967 vintage Nikon F was the lens I used most often. But my primary interest was nature photography, so it made sense for me.

| Thanks, Dave!! As soon as I read your post I ran to tell my boyfriend that I'd gotten a response directly from one of the author's of the Passporter! I ordered the lenses so we'll see how they turn out for us! Thanks again for your help!

| Dave is right, as you are just starting with the DSLR investing in an expensive macro lens is not a good idea. I purchased the same type add on lenses when I got my first DSLR. I use them sometimes, depending on the situation. I have found that I am using them more often lately now that I compete in photography competitions locally. I purchased the Canon EOS Rebel XSi (12 mp) DSLR 2 weeks ago and now am considering purchasing a true macro lens (canon of course) as I am keeping the 70-300 lense I purchased with old Rebel and the regular lens that came with my XSi. I think once you try out the add ons you will find that either you really love macro photography, or it is just ok sometimes use. Hope you enjoy your new camera and using the macro add on...I think they are a fun way to see things with new eyes!
