| Fussy Canon Digital Rebel Lens Has anyone else had this problem? The original 18-55mm lens that came with my Digital Rebel XT just quit working in AF mode after I had had it for about 2 1/2 years. Nothing had happened to it -- I used it one night, put it away in my camera bag, got it out the next night and it wouldn't auto focus. Not wanting to give up my camera for 6 weeks to send the thing back to Canon, DH bought me a refurbished one. That one lasted about 18 months and then started doing the same thing right in the middle of our Disney trip last month. ![]() Now it works, but only intermittently. My 75-300mm zoom lens works fine, so that tells me that it should be a problem with the lens and not the camera body itself. Anyone have any advice? I'm frustrated that we've invested in this camera and it's pooping out after just a few years. TIA! |

| My first thought, even before I read that another lens worked, was to clean the contacts on the lens. I make it a point to clean the contacts on all my lenses and cameras every 3 months, max! The same lens/camera combo sometimes oxidizes the contact point and a light cleaning solves that problem... The other suggestion is to find someone with a Canon Rebel and ask if you can put the lens on their camera to see if it works okay for them...

| Ditto what Bill said. I find the best thing for cleaning contacts is a pink pencil eraser. Just rub very lightly and you won't make any particles break off. G'Luck Craig

| Is your lens the IS version or the standard? I did a litle Googleing and found that the 17-55 EF-S IS has an unusually high failure rate among Canon lenses. | Thanks, WillCAD! My original lens that just stopped working altogether in AF mode was non-IS. The new one we bought to replace it that now works only intermittently in AF mode is an IS lens. I'm going to check out these links. It is soooo frustrating, but I really don't want to give up my camera for several weeks to get it fixed. |
