I'm not sure how to tell them, but I know I have to, because I'll have lots of photos and there's no way I could hide those from her! I'm really not sure how to tell them; I'm probably too worried about it but it is causing me some anxiety! We just went with them in April, and don't have another family trip planned.
DH actually wanted to go for a whole week (I thought this was too long, since this is the first time we've been away from the kids). When we told our children about the initial "week" long trip, my DD#1(10)got all teary eyed - because she'd miss us. My oldest DS(14) was unphased, and the youngest DD(8) was excited to be sleeping over at her cousin Emily's!! (Well at least 1 kid will miss us) So after discussing how many vacation days my DH had and what days we got the best "ding" value, we decided to leave on a Sunday and come back on Wednesday. This way the kids were only at their cousins house for 3 nights. DH and I joke (but not out loud to the kids) that this is our trial run for a full week at WDW by ourselves

We definitely had to tell the kids where we were going. They would have been relentless otherwise. And I wanted to share the experience of the Keys to the Kingdom with DS - who is bummed that he has 2 years to wait before he can do it himself.

Oh how fun! Happy Anniversary.

I don't think I could go to Disney without my kids, though it does sound like lots of fun!

I've said the very same thing before. But have come to realize that the kids have definite likes and dislikes about what they want to do in Disney!! For instance, they would rather hit EVERY arcade on every resort than watch Wishes more than once a trip!! Now DH and I could watch Wishes EVERYNIGHT! And those rotten kids WON'T ride the Haunted Mansion Ride. Not to mention we've always wanted to do Pleasure Island - which is really not for kids.

Betty,

My DH and I are taking a similar trip for our 10 year anniversary in September (8/31 - 9/3) and have similar plans. We are doing keys to the kingdom tour, Cali Grill, and PI as well as we have never been. I'm also very excited, but have not decided on what to tell our boys. We have 7 year old twins, one whom is Autistic and just wouldn't understand why we're not taking him. I also have a family trip booked for Feb 09. I think I'm just going to tell them that we are going away for a few days but not tell them where. Enjoy your trip and by the way...I do pretty much have a minute by minute itinerary!

Great plans and Happy Anniversary. Glad the kids took the news ok. I am leaving in a monthe for 4 days alone at the World and have threatened DH to not tell my three boys where I am going. They would never let me out of the house and altho I do feel a little guilty for leaving them behind, I can't wait to do Disney alone!

OK we didn't break it to them just that way. But DH found an awesome SW Ding several weeks back. We already have a 10 day family vacation planned for August, and the Ding was for July. We discussed it and we just couldn't afford 2 Family Disney trips about 2 1/2 weeks apart!! BUT, we could afford for just us two to go for our anniversary (which is the end of July!-oh and we do have annual passes that are burning a hole in our pockets) I didn't feel too guilty because the kids(14, 10, 8) will be going to WDW in August.

So DH and I will be without children for the first time in over 14 years! We'll be staying at SSR, and plan on doing EMH the first night (our flight arrives around 7:30pm), then the next morning we'll be doing Keys to the Kingdom, that evening we have ADR's at the Yachtsman Steakhouse, on the third day which is our actual anniversary (19years) we have dinner at Victoria and Alberts (I'm so excited!! I have a black cocktail dress and DH promised to wear a suit AND tie) We plan to end the evening at Pleasure Island at the soon to close Adventurers Club (so glad we'll be able to experience it at least once before it closes!) I didn't plan anything for the fourth day (my DH was teasing me that I probably had a minute-by-minute itinerary of our activities) so DH could veg or hang by the pool - and our flight leaves late that evening.

An anniversary trip that is long enough for us to have adult fun but short enough for the kids not to miss us too much(or us them ) - although they'll probably be having a great time at their cousins house.

Did I mention I'm really excited and its only 14 days away??
I love that you're going by yourselves. DH and I are going the day after Christmas. We haven't told the "kids" yet. (Ages 20 and 30--30 yr old is married) The trick here is that I want them to watch my new kids (cocker spaniels) while we're gone. Wonder how they're going to take it that Mom and Dad are going without them?

I have to love my oldest daughter (okay, so I HAVE to love them both, but I digress hehe)...

...so my wife and I are planning oru 10th Anniversary trip to WDW this October, and decided to watch the Fun for Grown Ups section of the planning DVD, and my 5 year old was still up, so we watched it with her. As we're watching all the stuff for Grown Ups, my 5 year old turns to my wife and says, "Hey Mom... look at all the fun stuff you and Daddy could do without us kids around. You guys should really go to Disney World...just you and Daddy."

Wife and I just look at each other, and of course ask if she'd mind if we went without her and her sister, and she replies, "No, it's no big (can you tell she's a Kim Possible fan hehe). Besides, we'll be going again in the winter, so I won't really mind.

So hey, now we get to go to Disney for our vacation, because it was our DAUGHTER'S idea, and new we only have to worry about keeping it from our youngest daugter, who is almost three, and probably wouldn't be as understanding as her older sister

Our plan was to not tell either kid about our final destination plans, and tell them when we got back. We'll be going as a family in February, so no big I'm sure they'll get over it hehe...

That's too cute, Tim.
I almost blew it yesterday. DH and I were invited over to dinnner at our oldest's home and I am so excited about our going that I almost told.

I just can't keep a secret over going to Disney World. *sigh*

Have a wonderful time! I know you will!!

How awesome!!! I know you must be absolutely excited, 1st trip in 14 years w/o kids.

My husband and I are going on our 1st trip in 6 years w/o kids, and I can hardly wait.

Tell me how the children take the news. We have decided not to tell our DS 6, and DD 4, where we are going, but to surprise them with a couple of special gifts when we get home. And then tell them.

Right now we are trying to focus on their special time they will get one on one with their grandparents.
