Gosh it's been too long since Ive been on here! Last trip in Sept. 2008- but we are ready to go back. Now that kids are older -jr. high, H.S. we have decided to go as soon as school is out instead of checking them out of school. Too much make up work! Love going in value season but........... Anyway, we plan on telling the kids we are going in Sept. so they can help be in on some of the planning but actually plan on going June 2nd. When they come home from school on the last day, the bags will be packed and off we will go. Anyone ever done something similiar and if so what kind of fun ways did you "share the surprise?" Thanks! Kathy

My friend did exactly that. Since it was during Star Wars Weekends she had Jedi Packs waiting for them. We will be heading down June 8th! Have fun! Oh, they also had a letter from Mickey Mouse that they had to find using a scavenger hunt telling them they were going.
Just a comment...my 11 year old grandson knows we are going to WDW in Nov. We have some friends who kept a trip secret from their teenage kids and I asked my grandson if he thought the surprise would be fun or if he would rather know and have the anticipation of leaving. He said he would definitely want to know.
We did something similar, but our kids were younger. We told them we were going for a drive and maybe spend the night in a hotel. (Airport is 2 hours away.) The next morning, I asked them what they wanted to do today and the next day. I told them I was going to have breakfast with the princesses.

I think you make the decision based on knowing your children, Yes, some Love being surprised, as mine did when they were younger . But my close girlfriend's children got surprised for Christmas last year (2011) and her DS( 9 )got very upset about leaving the next day without much notice. I have NOT yet told 2 (12&13) of the children we are going only my Oldest DS (14) know's. Because sometime's that anticipation is to much for a child to handle, which is my case..
We are surprising our sons, 14 and 9 for Christmas. The youngest has been begging to return and what we did was tell him Grandma was going with our family from Florida over Christmas and that we needed him to help pick out the restaurants and what the boys would like to do. So on the 21st we are getting up really early in the morning to take Grandma to Indy to the airport, in actuality we are getting in the van and headed to Florida with Grandma.
My plan is to fill the car with helium balloons and the items I have been buying from the disney store all year, when they open the doors and grumpley get in the van they will be attacked by balloons and find out they are the ones going and have gift cards to spend on whatever they want at Disney.
Great ideas so far...we are also planning to try to surprise our kids...11 & 7 in December. We usually take short weekend trips to the beach with part of the way is on I-95. We plan to say we're going to the beach and see how long it takes them to figure out we're going somewhere different. We're still trying to figure a way to "spring it on them" once they get suspicious. Looking forward to hearing more ideas. Great question!
Such fun ideas! Thank you! I wondered about the "planning" aspect as well, so that is why I thought it would be fun to let them help plan the trip for September, our DR's ect., but then the actual trip will be 3 months earlier "surprise!" They get the best of both worlds. The youngest is a huge Star Wars fan so to be there during Star Wars Weekend will be an extra bonus. Love the balloons in the car idea!

We are leaving in 34 days and we told the kids before hand. We STILL surprised them with the exciting news. My husband sat down with our 3 DD's and pulled out our photo albums from our past 2 trips. He proceeded to spend well over an hour going through each page and reminiscing of our past trips. On his lap he had 3 photo albums. when they got to the third album, it was a disney 2012 album and the kids proceeding to open it up and they all said "IT'S BLANK DAD" my hubby then told him that it was blank because they needed to fill it with new memories....
They all screamed and shouted. It was a great way to surprise them and a memory they will remember forever.
We thought about waiting and saying we were going camping then heading to the airport. However I know my kids would have been upset if they didn't know and didn't get to pack something special to wear or bring along that they got to personally choose.
Love the surprise factor!!! My mom when I was little blindfolded me until we were in front of the castle. It was amazing to see that castle for t he first time. I thought we were just going to see some relatives!!!
I made shirts for the kids that said there surprise trip to disney
and another one I herd of someone while the kids are in school they got a big box and put it in the the center of the room and filled it with ballons and a note attached to a string that said they are leaving for disney NOW
