Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort (Disney Deluxe Resort)

The Dolphin Resort is a luxury resort on Disney property (but managed by Starwood Hotels), located between Disney's Hollywood Studios and Epcot.

Official Guidebook Review: Our official review of the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort can be read in PassPorter's Walt Disney World guidebook (chapter 3).

Personal Review: We've stayed here many times over the years, with our most recent visit in December 2007. The Dolphin has two great things going for it: an excellent location and better discounts. Beyond that, however, we feel it lacks the charm and magic of the other Disney-managed resorts.

Other Reviews: We do not yet have a feature article on file for the Dolphin Resort. If you're interested in writing one, please contact Belle*.

We stayed at the Dolphin in December for four nights at Mousefest. I was pleasantly surprised.

The Pros:-

1. Location. Location. Location.

2. Comfortable rooms and exceptionally comfortable 'Heavenly' beds.

3. Excellent rates, more on par with a WDW Moderate than a Deluxe, though the comfort level was definitely in the Deluxe category.

4. Decent, varied choice of restaurants.

The Cons:-

1. That special Disney magic was lacking. The theming was non-existent.

2. Having to pay for parking irritated me somewhat.

3. The distance from the parking lot to the rooms.

4. This is a convention hotel, so it was full of folks on business. Didn't like that much.

5. An unheated swimming pool in December.

6. Not having the ability to charge stuff to the room.

Although the disadvantages appear to outweigh the advantages, that is not the reality. The location and price factors weigh heavily in my assessment of the Dolphin overall. To summarise, I would probably book the Dolphin in preference to any of the WDW Moderates, but would prefer to stay at any WDW Deluxe resort.

Thumbs down Beware . . . the Dolphin is not another Disney resort!

We had booked a week's stay for our WDW vacation eleven months in advance. We were delighted to get a great rate with the teacher's discount, we signed up for a Starwood Preferred Guest membership, and were thrilled to be so close to Epcot and the other parks as well as our friends who were staying at the Boardwalk the same week! Imagine our dismay and disappointment when the Dolphin called us 8 days before our arrival this past August and informed us that we were being relocated OFF Disney property to The Hyatt Regency for the first 5 nights of our 7 night stay, but they'd be nice enough to accomodate us the last 2 nights! It was shocking and alarming and handled in the most unprofessional manner I've ever experienced!

They blamed the relocation on "rooms not being rennovated in time" BUT it is imperative to keep in mind if you are brave enough to reserve this hotel that they cater to very large and frequent convention bookings and most certainly put all of their time and resources into serving these clients. We were told such things as "This happens from time to time" and "For our guests who are relocated, we usually have them . . . " It is also quite clear that they have an established arrangement and relationship with the Hyatt and despite numerous requests and phone calls, I do not believe for a second that any attempt whatsoever was made to relocate us to a Disney resort. It even took daily phone calls and 7 days to receive a written confirmation! (which arrived the day before we left!) The Dolphin's parent company, Starwood Hotels, was completely unconcerned, stating only "gee, we're sorry" and making empty promises to remedy the situation without any follow-up or calls back!

When we very inconveniently relocated ourselves over to the Dolphin for our last 2 nights, we found the hotel to be incredibly large, noisy, chaotic, and confusing. (Granted, our view was tainted from the start but nonetheless it cannot be argued that this property is not massive and poorly planned). Separate wings require separate elevators which can be hard to determine; the pool is nearly impossible to locate, as it is only accessible from one lower hallway, which again, requires a specific route from a specific wing and elevator; the noise of water flowing and a/c units shutting on/off kept us up throughout the night; food is often left in the hallways without being picked up; and frequent maintenance staff were seen making visits throughout the hallways (though were not needed by us particularly).

I was supposed to have received a free night with points from my Starwood AmEx card and still have to call and clarify why I was charged over $90 for my FREE night! Hard lesson learned . . . . we will not ever book a NON-DISNEY hotel again! And we will not ever stay at a Sheraton/Westin hotel either!

I'm sad to hear your report. We've stayed at the Dolphin over a dozen times (as recently as a couple of months ago) and have nothing but very positive experiences (are rooms are always upgraded for free, parking often comped, etc.). Certainly from every one who I know that has stayed there, your situation is definitey an exception from the norm. Keep in mind that bad experiences can happen anywhere. We had an aweful experience at Port Orleans in 2003 that would have blown your mind if you knew what went on.

We usually stay at Beach Club Villas and love the location. April the 10th my DH and I are staying at Dolphin 2 nights for our anniversary sans teenage boys . We've stayed at Dolphin b/f and its fine for a short visit. The price was half of BCV . I just go in knowing its not your typical Disney resort but I had good experiences with the Dolphin "cast members"
