If you fly into LAX I DON'T encourage driving at any point. I travel to SoCal often for business (conveniently long enough to walk around Downtown Disney). The SuperShuttle is great and very timely. If you fly into Orange County driving is super easy - try to time flights to avoid major rush hour (just realize now there is ALWAYS traffic in SoCal regardless of day and time).

We have driven twice around the area and it is great. If you are scared of getting lost while driving spring for the navigation system on the rental car. We did it the first time and it came in really handy. It is piece of mind if you get lost. Be prepared it doesn't work in the parking structure at Disney but will immediately pick up upong exiting.
