The weather should be fine late July on I-80. Are you driving straight through? It'll take another day or two to get all the way to San Francisco if you're not.
If I had only one day in San Francisco (and I'm assuming you've never been before), I think a tour of some kind is the way to go. We haven't specifically done the ferry tour, but I'm sure it'd be beautiful. And be prepared for it to be cold. San Francisco in July is COLD!

I don't think July is cold--- it's cooler at night but not cold...I would check weather.com before you leave to get the weather conditions then... As far as the ferry tour, never taken it but have gone to Alcatraz and liked it....I would spent almost a full day at the Pier area since I like it by the water and it is close to downtown so you can go towards town if you get bored at the Pier....

I've done SF lots of times! Take the ferry tour, if you are okay with motion sickness, going out is fine, it's the current coming back in that gets me green! The ferry takes you out past the Golden Gate and is just so pretty. It will be cold in July, just not they kind of cold you are probably use to. It will be warm and sunny and cold at the same time. Bring a windbreaker type of jacket, it's the bay breeze that makes it chilly. I would definately wear layers and comfy walking shoes!

If you have never been to SF, I would take the Ferry tour, and if you are up to it, take the Alcatraz tour. Then I would take the Trolly tour and if you can make enough time, do the China Town tour, they use to let you out at the Fortune Cookie factory for you to tour and get to taste fresh made cookies! Yummy!

There is so many things you can do there....if you want to take the self tour, take the scenic drive for Hwy 1 around SF. Then there is the Golden Gate park, so pretty and in July the Buffalo should be out in the park. The musems are great at the park too. July should have the kites out on the pier which is fun to watch. And don't miss the fresh crab and shrimp goodies right on the pier, you buy them right off the street vendors. It's a great city to visit for the day.

Whatever you end up doing, you will have a wonderful visit! Just driving around downtown and looking at all of those skyscrappers are cool....

Have a blast!

Before I moved to San Francisco a friend gave me the book, "How to Enjoy 1 to 10 Perfect Days in San Francisco" and it was wonderful - although it usually took me 3 days to do 1 day. LOL.

The coastal areas of California, including San Francisco, are often foggy in the summer because of being located between the ocean and the heat of the Central Valley. Fisherman's Wharf sells a lot of hooded sweatshirts to tourists who arrive in their shorts. So just be prepared and bring layers.

There's so much to do in the area it's hard to just pick one. But a tour may help you out if you don't want to drive the steep hills and it can take you to several places in a short amount of time.

Have fun!

Kathy

Hey Kathy! I have that book and another called San Francisco on a shoestring budget! I love both of those books and pull them out each time we take a quick weekend to the bay area.

Nighttime in July in SF can be cool. DH and I went to SF on our honeymoon; we were married on July 3 and had a fireworks cruise on the 4th. We arrived in shirt sleeves and shorts, thinking it would get cool, but not cold. I don't know the exact temp, but we were freezing by the end of the night and could see our breath. We were quite uncomfortable!! So definitely bring something warm for the evening!!

Just our experience....

How cool!! A map is also handy - don't think I ever left the house without one.

Coming through the midwest on I-80 you should be fine. Thunder storms are of course possible but 80 is a good road so it shouldn't be an issue. Expect a possible major traffic back up around the Illinois/Indiana border depending on the time of day you hit that area. Avoid 4pm-7pm if at all possible or it can add 2 hours or more of drive time. It's the biggest trouble section I know of from Western Ohio thru Iowa construction withstanding. I haven't been east this year so I'm not sure what that construction is like right now. The joke in Northern Illinois is that we have two seasons, winter and construction.

If you're a PC user I HIGHLY reccomend Microsoft Streets and Trips for your journey. It's the best mapping & long distance driving software I've found.

Hope that helped some.
