I would go from Las Vegas to Disneyland, then to San Francisco (no need to backtrack all those miles). LA to SF can be a wonderful drive. Stop and have lunch when the road hits the coast, or even take two days, and visit Hearst Castle at San Simeon (you can make timed tour appointments in advance).

That's what I would plan, too - Vegas to Disneyland to SF. To go from Vegas to SF and then back down to Disneyland eats up time you could spend in the actual places rather driving to them.

Pay attention to one-way rentals. Many cost a LOT more when the return is in another state (if you fly into Vegas, rent a car and return it in SF to fly out from there).

I live in San Francisco so know all about the drive to LA!

There are three major routes you can choose if you drive.

Interstate five----fast and boring!!!

Highway 101. Slow and occasionally pretty(especially around Santa
Barbara. Its a long trip--8 to 10 hours depending on how fast you drive.
This is the one I would recommend.

Highway One. Very very slow and beautiful. It meets up with Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo. But on highway 1 you are on the edge of the state. Mountains to one side and the ocean on the other. Big Sur, Monterry, etc. Beautiful but slow.

If you are gonna stay in San Luis Obispo you might want to check out the Madonna Inn. One of the strangest and most fun motels ever. Each room has its own theme!! I like the Flintstone Room myself.

Good luck.

I agree with all of the above. I've lived in all 3 places (grin) and have done all of the aforementioned trips. I've flown from SF to Vegas and then driven to Disneyland. I've driven from SF to Disneyland and SF to Vegas. I recommend taking 101 between Southern and Northern California - the drive is much more interesting than I-5 and doesn't take that much longer.

Madonna Inn is a hoot. Any more questions, just ask.

I agree with Scott, we have done the trip from Sacramento to SF to DL many times. If you have the time and never have done the coastal drive, go for it. It is so beautiful. Otherwise, take the 101. The 5 is way boring and you don't get to see the beauty of California.

Also if you take Highway One you can see Hearst Castle. It is worth seeing. You can also approach it from Highway 101 from San Luis Obispo going north.

This is wonderful info. We just moved to TX and plan on driving to DL in 2010 but also wanted to take in SF. I will definitely be sure to make a note of all of your driving tips and neat places to stay. Thanks for posting!
