HELP
For the dazed and confused they made a list of detours. I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project | Detours
It is best to avoid the area starting as far south or north as possible.
Side streets are going to be jammed especially Sepulveda.
LAX LAX: 405 Freeway Alert
They are next to what will become an extremely crowded Sepulveda Blvd. They are down by the 101 freeway but getting there will be a pain in the neck.
Public transportation in some cases is free and they are adding more buses. Check with them for more information.
Mom calls to check on me and reminded me to pay the gardener. I love her so much.
Disneyland was fun with flag retreat and pickles. I have a home here, thank you. GAC is NOT a "front of the line pass".
She is gone but keeping signature. Laundry is getting done. My purpose in life is to help poor people in FL. Farewell, will miss you.
So glad I found this post! We are leaving soon for our first California adventure. We will be driving from Lompoc to San Deigo on Sunday, the 17th. Our plans are to stick with Coastal hwy 1 as much as possible (for sightseeing; we know it will add on to the trip). Will that route be affected? Any thoughts on when would be a good time to leave Lompoc to avoid traffic issues (ok, that's probably a joke right!!)
I cannot help you as I am on the opposite end of the county.
It is going to be weekend traffic thankfully. Watch the news for major problems. Can you rent a boat? Joking of course.

Ack! Carmageddon sounds like the right word for it!
I guess it is kind of like a blessing and a curse . . . the blessing is that it is mostly happening over a weekend, so traffic should probably not be completely gridlocked. The curse is that it is happening at all . . . traffic is never great in LA and this sure won't help it!

The PCH may well have some extra traffic. If it were me, personally, I would take the PCH from Lompoc to Santa Monica and jump on I-10 then get on the 5 through the greater LA area. You can cut back across to the PCH by getting on the Costa Mesa Freeway south of Santa Ana (which puts you back on the PCH in Newport Beach). It ends at San Clemente, but then I-5 is pretty close to the water for a good portion of the drive into San Diego.
If I were driving, I would probably leave Lompoc at around 7:00-7:30 which should get you to Santa Monica around 9:15-9:45, then you should probably be able to make it to I-5 by 10:15 or so (provided traffic isn't crazy! ). From there, you should probably be able to make it to San Diego by 1:30 or so, provided traffic is rolling good and you don't run into any major snags along the way.
It is here, please check online and news for best routes.
This is a major artery for traffic along the coast from Long Beach to Santa Monica that is used to reach the northern half of the county. Santa Monica probably will be hit hardest. Good luck and waiting for anyone to post problems they had with this traffic nightmare. The bridge is half coming down which means next year another closure, sigh.

My husband has a friend flying from MCO into LAX tomorrow morning who didn't know a thing about this. My husband told his friend when he called today just to chat.
He was going to Hollywood, Universal Studios and Disneyland. He is not a happy camper right now.
It has been in the news for a while. Too late to fly into Burbank. Check out helicopter shuttles as some are available to get over the mountains. His plans for Hollywood and Universal would take him though the mountains and carmaggedon. Maybe he could do Disneyland first then the other places later.

From all reports I have heard thus far, it is moving much smoother than they initially thought it would. We have a friend who lives in the area and he said this morning was a breeze getting where he needed to go. I am curious to find out how things are looking this afternoon though!

If the friend isn't arriving until tomorrow morning, it might not be so bad...only Sunday of the friend's vacation will really be affected. Even if the plan was to go to Hollywood or Universal Studios on Sunday, it's not too difficult to take the 105 East to the 110 North, to the 101 North to get there. Even without the road closure, that's the route I would've taken anyway.
I just took a peek at sigalert.com (my choice for checking LA traffic), and things actually look REALLY good for a Saturday afternoon. I think a lot of locals are staying off the roads all weekend, so it might not be so bad for visitors from out of town!
I remember when the 1984 Summer Olympics were held in LA. We had the same "horror" predictions about how bad traffic would be in LA during those weeks. My dad's work actually modified work schedules so that he could commute during off traffic hours. In the end, it turned out to be no big deal.
To be honest, I think traffic will be way worse when things get back to "normal" on Monday, lol!

It's even made it on the news over here! They said that most people had stayed home and that fortunately things were nowhere near as bad as everyone feared.

I'm grew up in the LA area so I'm from there, just not far enough from it, down here is San Diego. Hahaha. WORSE for the LA area is more normal than anything else. From what I have been seeing and hearing, they should shut down a freeway every now and then as traffic now seems lighter than 'norm'. lol
I heard on the radio about half an hour ago that they're opening up any minute now (or may already be open at this point). Sounds like everything got done WAY ahead of schedule.
