About Disney gift cards

I guess I could have posted this in the other section too, but I was wondering about the gift cards...is there an expiry date? We're going in a year, but I was wondering about getting one for myself and my dd for stocking stuffers this year. How long can we hold on to them?

WARNING
I had my purse stolen and did not write down the number for the cretificate. YOU MUST WRITE DOWN AND KEEP A COPY OF THE CERTIFICATE NUMBER and keep 20 copies in many places or you do not get your money back. I am out $250 and my only option is to stop payment on that purchase and legally I have no recourse.

I say gift cared are a high risk and not worth the being on a trip short $250 which was half of our alloted expense. I would never again do gift certificates unless I tattooed the certificate number on my face and painted it on my car and house.
