Would you book if you had no idea if it was even possible to go?
Just for the heck of it, after we got home from WDW, we started talking about DisneyLAND. We didn't go there this year because 1) my mother said we wouldn't like it and I didn't do any research to tell me differently and 2)The last time I was on a plane, my head felt like it wanted to explode and being on a plane for 6 plus hours just was not going to happen. Now that I did the plane from MA to FL successfully, I know it's possible for me to get on a plane without huge problems - which leads us to thinking we should try DL some day. I've looked into it and the DL of today isn't the DL of 30 years ago that my mother is thinking about - and I really think we'd enjoy it. Only problem is we literally have no money for vacation - and I don't know that I can come up with it. Knowing that, would you book a hotel now in hopes that a miracle happens and cancel if it doesn't or just wait until you know for sure you can go? Part of me wants to book something because after looking at the hotels, I think there's only going to be one we'd be happy with - the HoJo's with the kids suites. It's got a king bed that Lenny and I really need and it's got the separate room for Abby with a real bed instead of a pullout - both kind of necessary for her to get a good night's sleep. None of us seem to sleep well if we're in the same room so that's why we need the 2 rooms. And I love the pool area for Abby - it's got an actual pool for them to swim in plus the somewhat water park area that I think she'd enjoy as well. And on top of all of that, I know they don't have too many of those rooms available (I think the video only said there's 14 of them total).
So WWYD? Book and hope for a miracle or let it go and worry about it when and if we get the money?
Are you thinking of going next summer? If so, I would go ahead and book, and see if you can save up the money to go. Also if you don't already, subscribe to the Mousesavers newsletter. I always see discounts for hotels or specials with hotels and tickets. And often it's Howard Johnson's that I see!
Who me?? Would I think about going back that soon ?? As stupid or crazy as it seems, yeah, I'd like to go next year. I did just sign up for Mousesavers - I really have no idea why I never did it before - so I guess that leaves just getting up the gumption to actually book something and keep my fingers crossed. I just don't know if I will or not as I usually book when I know I can go.
If youn are able to cancel the hotel without a penalty then I guess you should book it. You will need to consider the cost of the airfare and park tickets and food.u So if you think there is any possibility that you can come up with the money then go for it.
Okay Kathy - I'm placing all the blame on you. I signed up for Mousesavers, I got the email and then I went and just checked out the site out of curiousity - and I can't believe the rate for being a Mousesavers subscriber - it's even cheaper than my AAA rate. Needless to say, I just booked a room . Now it's time to hope and pray - and really hope and pray Abby doesn't find out as she'd think it's a definite that we're going.

Oh Olive, if only you knew. I've aleady done several budgets for a trip to DL so I have a really, really good idea of what it would cost if we went. And if we do, it would have to be strictly DL as adding in things like the SD Zoo and Sea World would add a nice chunk of change (different hotel, rental car, more park tickets, etc) I know I can't come up with. And I did check - as long as I cancel 48 hours in advance, there's no penalty.

These are the reasons I dropped my DL idea for next spring (for the moment at least) because for me, it's WAY more expensive to travel to DL than to WDW.
But yay on booking a room!!! Always awesome to have something to look forward to and plan for.

It is expensive to travel to DL - I give you that. It's also why I don't know if I can come up with the money. If I can, at least I know we'll have a room we'll be comfortable in and happy with. And with Abby being Abby, she's not going to care about anything in LA, nothing at US is "appropriate" for her (either big kids rides or things that would scare the pants of her) so we might as well not go. Sea World we can do in FL - I can't imagine the parks would really be all that different and as for the zoo, are they really all that different from each other? Last time we took Abby to the zoo, after a couple of hours she was done and I can't really see spending the kind of time and money it would take for the SD zoo for just a couple of hours. I'd rather add an extra day of DL. And all of this may be a moot point. I may not be able to come up with the money at all, but it does kind of give me something to plan on. And if all else fails and I can't come up with enough and I have to cancel, I have all that much more to put towards a possible 2013 trip to WDW when the new Fantasyland should be done.
I really hope that you are able to pull it off. At least like you said you have a nice room booked and you can cancel if you need to. Time to start saving!

Thanks Olive - and that's why I'm okay with the room I booked - I can always cancel if need be. I'm just going to take it one day at a time and let come what may. As long as Abby doesn't find out anything then there won't be any tears if it doesn't happen.
Darlene there are heaps of great budgeting ideas in the forums. If you want it bad enough you will be willing to work very hard to get it - I honestly believe this!
I picked up one piece of useful budget info somewhere (maybe it was here) that you decide how much you need to save then rule up a grid on a Disney colouring in page with a number of squares equal to each $50 or $100 you need to budget. Once you have saved that $50 you colour in that square. As the page gets more colour your motivation should increase and hopefully you achieve the goal.
Whatever you decide - good luck and have fun planning!

Those are the reasons it is going to take me forever to save to go to DL. I figure I will only make it to CA once in my life so I'd want to do it ALL. Glad you booked you room and hopefully it will all work out and if not at least you know you have plenty of time to cancel with no penalty.
To make it to our next trip I really did use saving strategies...every stop for coffee had a second thought attached to it! And, it does add to the magic of to 'have' to think about Disney so often! LOL

I bought our D23 Expo tickets and booked a room. Life has had mean people attacking us in real life. Mom and I were not going until finally now she is ready to go. She even talks about WDW now though with a lot of negative stuff. Every trip I booked not knowing if we could make it. I know that I have until the 15th to cancel rooms. It is better to book now than try to find the right room later.
hugs
Laurie

Disneyland was fun with flag retreat and pickles. I have a home here, thank you. GAC is NOT a "front of the line pass".
She is gone but keeping signature. Laundry is getting done. My purpose in life is to help poor people in FL. Farewell, will miss you.
