Hotels around Disneyland

I'm asking this question on behalf of a co-worker who is planning on going to DL in July. They don't want to pay the higher $$ at the DL resort hotels but does anyone have a suggestion for a nice/clean hotel across the street from the parks? They have 3 kids so they want to be as close as possible.

Thanks guys!

I keep hearing about the Candy Cane Inn as a good choice. -HiddenMickey

Re: Hotels around Disneyland

We stayed at the Candy Cane last trip.

Clean, nice-sized room, and a decent continental buffet breakfast.

Not across the street, but on the same side, a little over a 5 minute walk, and there is a shuttle.

I believe we paid $89/night for the "deluxe room" which included a small fridge.

Re: Hotels around Disneyland

The "walking distance" hotels on Harbor Blvd. are all motels. There is a Howard Johnson's, Fairfield Inn, Park Inn International, Carousel Inn and Suites, Tropicana Inn, Best Inn, and Saga Inn are the ones I recall from the top of my head. The ones I would stay at? Howard Johnsons, Fairfield Inn, Park Inn International, and we have stayed at Carousel Inn on a few occasions with a good rate.
I've heard lots of great things about Candy Cane Inn. I'd like to try it one day, as well. Bonus is that their shuttle is a private one. It's a little farther down the road, but not too bad.
Most of the hotels/motels in the Anaheim area offer free shuttle to/from the parks.
Most of these shuttles are a third party bussing service which runs on the hour to half-hour, depending on season and time of day.
Our favorite offsite hotel is Hawthorn Suites on Clementine St. They offer a full continental breakfast, with lots of choices and goodies including Mickey waffles, cold cereal selection, fruit, good coffee and hot cocoa and juices. A good value, and the kids really like the breakfast room.
We have always found the Unofficial Guide to be right on about rooms and their quality. I personally wouldn't stay below a 2 star in the area, but that is me. The one time we ended up in a pit, Parkside Inn and Suites, we hadn't consulted the book. Until the DLR Passporter comes out, (no, really, I'm TRYING to be patient ,) it's the best resource available.
HTH,

Re: Hotels around Disneyland

I believe the name of the closest non-resort property hotel is the Best Western Park Place Inn. It is as close if not closer than the Disneyland hotel to the parks. We have stayed there and it is fine. Clean, not too noisy, what you would expect from a chain. It was under $100/night and the best thing was the location. The crosswalk to Disneyland is at the front door of the hotel. No need for a shuttle, literally a 5 minute walk (or less) to the gate.

Re: Hotels around Disneyland

I have stayed at the Candy Cane Inn twice! It is very convenient as the others have said and my kids love it! We will probably stay there again in July although I am trying to find a way to stay at one of the DL resorts. It won't be a bad consolation if we have to stay here! It is really cute and clean. ( Also the rate is 77.00 a night right now.)

Re: Hotels around Disneyland

I have to add another hotel. It's not on Harbor, but on Walnut St. It's right next to the parking structure, but very quiet. Holiday Inn and Suites, formerly the Conestoga. The staff was great, the room clean and neat, kids eat free at the cafe (coffee shop,) and they have a great warm clean pool and jacuzzi and a lounge adjacent to the pool. We hadn't been there since it was Ramada owned, but we will definitely be back. The new Anaheim Resort Transit "A" is your route, and starts at the hotel, then heads around the corner to Harbor Blvd to the shuttle drop offs next to the entrances, with only one stop in between. It was very convenient! The new ART costs $2 per adult per day, but the hotel comped the tickets as one of their amenities. The hotel is western-themed, down to the colors.
We can't wait to go back in November/December!
Anyway, HTH,

Ooops! Forgot to add that there is a Texaco station with a Subway and TCBY yogurt shop and a taco shop inside, which is at the corner. We didn't go this time, but it will be nice to have when we go back for a longer stay. Subway is very POINTS-friendly.

Re: Hotels around Disneyland

We've stayed at the Howard Johnson and the Best Western Park Place - both were nice, clean and moderatley priced. Best Western is closest but you can walk from any of the hotels on Harbour. From the Howard Johnsons you can see the Matterhorn and the monorail go around and if you get a top floor room you can see the fireworks from your room. Lots of restaurants - from McD's to IHOP are convenient. We also stayed at the Sheraton - further away but they transported us back and forth very efficiently.
