| Now playing: Mesmerized by pandas and primates Sunday, February 17, 2008 – Day 3/Part 2 We made our way down the hill and headed towards the Giant Panda Research Station. The line was kind of long, but we wanted to wait anyway. The line was deceiving and moved fairly quickly; before long we were entering the panda area. ![]() They were quite active. (I don’t remember the pandas being this active when we’ve seen them at the National Zoo in Washington, DC, but that was also years ago. We stood there for a while watching them eat their bamboo. My shots: ![]() ![]() ![]() Kyle’s shots: ![]() ![]() ![]() Once we finished in there, we decided we should at least get something to drink because we hadn’t eaten since our gourmet McDonald’s breakfast of champions. Kyle had a diet coke & a churro, Jeffrey had a coke float and I had a root beer float. When we ordered our drinks, the girl behind the counter told us to save our cups; we would be able to get refills for $1.28 for the remainder of the day. We never did get refills, but I thought that was good information to have. We found a place to sit and enjoy our snacks, which surely hit the spot! When Kyle finished his churro, he asked for an ice cream. I have no idea where he puts it all, but I let him go get one while Jeffrey and I finished our floats. The line had grown at the counter, so we were finished long before he got his ice cream. I went into the gift shop and bought a few small items: a handpainted panda ornament, a couple of zoo magnets, some postcards and a pack of cards. None of it was too extravagant, but it was something to remember our trip by. (I’m finding the more trips we take, the fewer & fewer souvenirs we ‘need’ to purchase) Once Kyle finished up his ice cream, we were ready to venture on through the zoo. We were right by the 2nd escalator, so we headed up. I kind of like the way the light is shining in this one. ![]() We wandered around the area and viewed the bird exhibits. Then we ventured into the Gorilla Tropics. (This area kind of reminded me of the Great EscAPE at the Oklahoma City Zoo. I used to visit that a couple of times a week with Kyle when he was a baby. We would spend hours there; sometimes I would just sit, watch and talk to them – I knew them all by name - & the docents, while Kyle snoozed in his stroller. Four of the females had babies one summer – one even had Down’s syndrome. One of my favorite moments was when one of the mamas held up her baby to the glass for me. Even the docent had never seen her do such a thing. I wonder if she showed me because I was always bringing Kyle to show her. I dunno. It’s a nice memory in the midst of the horror I was living at the time.) Anyway, back to California! We had a lot of fun watching the gorillas. There were a couple of young ones that were into causing all sorts of trouble. They would roll around on the ground, spin themselves into circles – I was dizzy just watching them! – and poke at the big silverback, who was quite patient with them! Kyle and I both took a TON of photos! In sorting through mine, I realized my viewfinder found some inappropriateness! ![]() ![]() ![]() Kyle’s photos: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This guy was just amazing to watch. Wouldn’t want to meet him in a dark alley!! The muscles in his arms are huge! ![]() ![]() We had to drag ourselves away from there! We meandered over to the Absolutely Apes exhibit, where we found orangutans and some other kind of ape. They weren’t as funny as the gorillas, but they were fun to watch. My photos: ![]() ![]() Kyle’s photos: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We stayed there for quite a while and then decided to make our way down to the lower part of the zoo. Looking back at the map, I realize we missed The Treehouse and Ituri Forest areas, with the tigers, okapis, hippos, etc. That zoo was enormous, so we were bound to miss something; at least we only missed animals we’ve seen at other zoos. There was no way we could do it all! Up Next: “I am a delicate flower!” ![]()

| What a wonderful update Dyan...I love the zoo. Your pictures are great....I love watching the gorillas and the moneys, they just remind me so much of how we are with our children... That was a great story about you and the gorillas when Kyle was young.... Can't wait for more...

Somehow, I think we’d stand a much better chance of surviving in the gorilla exhibit though! ![]() Quote:

| Sunday, February 17 - Day 3/PartIII Now playing: “I am a delicate flower!” ![]() Sunday, February 17, 2008 – Day 3/Part 3 At the bottom of the hill was Flamingo Lagoon. They were the most beautiful salmon color! I guess they must be eating a LOT of shrimp!! ![]() ![]() This statue was at the base of the hill, by the path leading up past the flamingos to the gorilla exhibit ![]() We walked around the reptile house toward the Wegeforth Bowl, where the sea lion show would be held shortly. We have seen more than our share of sea lion shows in the New England area, but we figured we’d take in one show since we had missed the show in the other amphitheatre featuring wolves. No one was really in there yet & we had a little time, so we decided to check out the Reptile Mesa, which was just adjacent to the theatre. I don’t have any photos of the tortoises, so they must not have been out. Kyle & I both took photos of some of the iguanas that were out basking in the sun. ![]() I like Kyle’s shots ![]() ![]() ![]() Once we were finished there we entered the theatre. We decided to sit on the opposite side in the back, which put us right by the entrance to the Children’s Zoo as we exited. The Children’s Zoo was the one area we hadn’t had a chance to touch at all yet! We watched the sea lion show and it was very similar to what we’ve experienced other places around here, but it was still fun to watch. We left just as they were ending the performance and ventured over to the Children’s Zoo. I managed to talk Jeffrey into taking this photo! Kyle was having no part of it! Smart boy!! “I am a delicate flower!” If Jeffrey sees this he’s going to kill me!! Not to mention what he’s going to do after I post a few comments on some of the firemen’s MySpace pages! If you don’t hear from me, he’s disposed of the body somewhere! ![]() I volunteered to get in this one and Kyle took the picture. I also convinced my unsuspecting soul of a husband to put his face in the hole on the left (or right, as you can see in the photo) He was clueless about why I was so willing to take a photo and why I was so pleased in the process, until we were reviewing the photos from our trip! ![]() ![]() Then we went into the building with all of the insects, which totally intrigue me. Of course, I have fun trying to gross Jeffrey out too. He never fared too well, when we used to watch Fear Factor and the contestants ate all sorts of lovely bugs & stuff. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After that we poked around the exhibits set up in the area. ![]() ![]() ![]() I couldn’t convince either of my boys to pose behind the boy cut out! The safest one of the three and neither one would do it, so I did it! DH must have been onto me or something!![]() ![]() Our final stop of the day was The Nursery. There were lots of neat things in there, but this had to be the best sight of the day! You can’t really tell very well from this photo, but there are 2 diapered baby gorillas in there. ![]() We watched them for a while and just as we were getting ready to leave, one of the zookeepers came along and took one of the gorillas out to feed! We had to keep standing there to watch some more! I would so to have this job!!![]() At this point, the zoo was about to close, so we made our way out. ![]() ![]() ![]() It was a perfect day at the San Diego Zoo! If we ever make it to California again, I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to spend another day (or even two) there! Up Next: Rock n’ roll and good eats at the Corvette Diner! ![]()
