It's a tricky question, because it depends a lot on traffic and time of day. We've driven a lot between San Diego & Carlsbad and then Carlsbad & Anaheim. It's a straight show down I-5. Without worrying about traffic, I'd say it's probably about 1 hr 45 minutes. You'll definately encounter a little heavy traffic somewhere along the route at any given time of day, but if you hit the roads at the wrong time, you could end up with a lot longer trip. We're usually driving North in the early AM and South in the late PM and don't encounter a lot of traffic. However, the opposite side of the freeway is PACKED. Google maps lists it as a 96 mile trip at about 1 hr 37 minutes.

We live in SD and travel to DL atleast once a month but this is usually early Sat mornings. We leave our home about 6am and pull into the parking lot about 7:40 to 7:50. Very light traffic. When we leave to return home the next day, it is usually arount 3pm and get homes about 5 or 5:15 as the traffice is a bit heavier. During the week you can be sure to encounter much heavier traffic both ways between 6 and 10 in the mornings and 3 to 6 in the evenings. If you are not driving alone be sure to use the HOV lanes where available as they are a great help.
