San Diego Hotel

My family and I will be doing a tour of California in June. We are starting in San Francisco, spending 3 days there at the Fairmont. Then spending 4 days in DL at the Grand Californian. Then we will go to San Diego to see the zoo and Sea World. I am completely overwhelmed by the number of hotels in this area. When my husband and I visited San Diego before we stayed at the Hotel del Coronado but were looking to stay somewhere closer to Sea World this time for convience with our kids. Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice hotel in this area? Has anyone stayed at the Holiday Inn Mission Bay, is it nice? Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: San Diego Hotel

I have never been to San Diego, but my hubby has twice. Both times were business trips, so his company payed for everything, so I'm not sure on the pricing, but here is the names of the hotels he stayed at.

The first one he liked ALOT:
Catamaran Resort Hotel
3999 Mission Boulevard
San Diego, CA 92109
800.422.8386
www.catamranresort.com

The second one he said was out in the middle of nowhere except for a winery close by:
The Hilton Garden Inn San DIego/Rancho Bernardo
17240 Bernardo Center Drive
San Diego, CA 92128
1.858.676.1660

His Company always books thourgh expedia.com.

Re: San Diego Hotel

Last May, we stayed at the Hilton San Diego Resort. The location was great! We were within a mile of Sea World (we could see the nightly fireworks) and within easy highway access to the other sites in San Diego like the Zoo. The hotel also had its own beach front area with walking trails all the way to Sea World. I would say, though, that on the downside, the rooms felt a bit "old" and there was no off-site food within walking distance which we would have liked. The rooms were a bit pricey since it is a "resort" and there was a daily parking fee. It's true that there are a lot of hotels in the area. We chose Hilton because we collect their points. Re: San Diego Hotel

We stayed in the Hotel del Coronado on our visit to San Diego, so I'm afraid I can't help, but I just wanted to say that you'll love the Fairmont in San Francisco. We stayed there and thought it was a lovely hotel.

Re: San Diego Hotel

i dont remember where i stayed, but i had no complaints. i was using the mass transit system to get around and it was pretty close to the bus hub to boot.

if proximity is important, i use a program called travelaxe which is free to download (pc only) and use. it will search many travel sites for availability and find you the best available price. you can sort the results by proximity to several points of interests depending on the city.

Re: San Diego Hotel

While I have never stayed at the Holiday Inn Mission Bay, I have stayed a few times at the Holiday Inn Express - Sea World Area, which is quite close (about 1 mile) to Sea World. It is a pretty nice little place . . . small, but nice. There is a real small parking garage underneath the hotel and "overflow" parking on the street, but it is on a dead end and off the major traffic path. There is also a real small swimming pool and a hot tub. Like I said, small. But it really is nice!

Each time my parents go to San Diego (and any time I have been there with them since about 1992) that is where we stay . . . in fact, last time my mom called to make a reservation, the receptionist said "Oh wow! It's nice to have you with us again! Geez, what it this, 15 years that you've been coming to visit us?!"

Re: San Diego Hotel

I grew up in San Diego. I think the Hilton San Diego is very nice, and fairly close to Sea World. That is a good choice. You don't want any hotels out in RB (Rancho Bernardo), that is quite a hike back down to Sea World. Have fun planning, and have a blast!
