Cool good neighbor hotel - HI Express?

Hey, everybody! We are heading to Southern CA in mid-April (can't wait, coming from near Philly--go Phillies! Too cold here for me!). This will be our first time flying cross country with the kids (2 boys, 11 and 9); I haven't been there since 8 months pregnant with the older DS ! Looking for recommendations for a good neighbor hotel. Has anyone ever stayed at the Holiday Inn Express near DL? Pros and Cons? Comparisons to the Tropicana or HoJo Inn? Also, will it be swimming weather then? Should we bring shorts?
Thanks so much!

While I have stayed at other HIE in different cities with great success, I have not stayed at this one. It does get high marks and reviews on Trip Advisor:

We live down the road from DL, San Diego, but when we want to spent the weekend we usually stay at Ramada Inn Maingate (which is a short walk from the enterance) or Super 8 on Katella Ave (which is next door to HIE). We used to stay at Holiday Inn but they have priced themselves right out of our wallet. We'd rather spend the difference on a good meal at one of the many great places on property than on a room we will only use to sleep, shower and change cloths.
