Planning a trip to DL over Christmas and trying to decide which hotel to stay in The Disneyland Hotel or the Paradise Pier? What are the pros and cons of each?
While I haven't had the opportunity to stay at Paradise Pier, we did stay at Disneyland Hotel December last year and just loved it. I imagine PP, with it's beach theme, has a laid-back casual feel, whereas the newly renovated rooms at Disneyland Hotel feel upscale and elegant. I LOVED the headboards that lit up, the bathroom with it's soft green and cream tiles just felt very classy, and just the overall experience was very magical. Within our room (in Frontier tower -- and it may be in all the rooms) there was this fantastic black and white large picture/photo of Walt walking through the castle. Both DH and I commented early on how it was a great picture and one we'd love to have. I believe this is it.
So, even though I can't compare the two, DLH gets a big thumbs up from us.

Ah, one thing possibly worth noting, the walk from PP to the parks will be a little bit longer than from DLH. Not a whole lot, but at the end of the day with tired feet, every little step counts.

I used my DVC points to stay there for just one night. They didn't have any DVC units available. This was during Labor Day weekend. We were in a premium room (this is all that was available when I booked through MS). I requested the Adventure tower with a DTD/Theme park view. I was lucky enough to get it. We were on the 8th floor and it was just incredible. We were able to view the fireworks from the room with the sound piped in on the TV.
I had a choice of all three hotels and chose the DL hotel because of the pools. PPH hotel pool just didn't cut it for my DD 12 and our friends who were staying with us. The Monorail slides were a big hit with our girls. The room was a great size as well.

As someone who stays at all three of the resort hotels between DLH and PP, the distance to the DGC gate into DCA, PP is by far closer but if you are going to take the monorail into DL then yes DLH is by far closer.
I think if the price difference isn't an issue, DLH is far superior. The atmosphere and theming is just at a much higher level. Plus with the recent remodel, everything feels fresh and nice. There is nice landscape and the pools are so much nicer. All of the public areas of the DLH are larger and just of a higher quality of design. We love it there obviously ;-) I would say that while PP is really good, the DLH is great!
If you are using DVC points to stay--you should see if there are rooms available at the GCF DVC villas! It's wonderful to be able to walk right into California Adventure and the walk to DL is shorter.

I tried the villas and there were no rooms available. My points were in holding so I had to wait 2 months until travel time to use them and by that time they were all booked.
DLH rocks! So glad you made the decision to stay there. We have stayed there several times in the past years and we love it. The remodel has definitely taken things up a notch there. We love the Tiki bar, absolutely a blast to hang out there. We got a drink that came out with some type of a chant and then they threw cinniman into it and it sparked!! Super cool. The rooms are nice and big as well. Have a blast!

I was going to mention the distance too. Doesn't the monorail go to DLH?
