DLH concierge or GC theme park view?

DH and I are going to DL alone this summer. This will be our first time away from DD in 3 years and our first solo vacation in about 7 years. I have us booked at the GC theme park view. I got the confirmation today and after looking at the price ($2,133 for 4 nights) I'm wondering if we should do the DLH concierge instead. I've stayed at both hotels before, but never on the Concierge level. Because of the time of year we're going (July 3-7) I think we'll probably hang out at the hotel more than we usually do. I can picture hanging out on the balcony and chilling with a glass of wine. The balconies at the GC are nice, but hard to see over when you're sitting down. On the other hand, the DLH balconies are easy to see through, but you really are just sitting in your room. And, the big question, is concierge really worth it? (If anyone can tell me what you get I'd really appreciate it!)
Help!! What do you all think?

Oh, and I'm booking this just as a hotel reservation, in case DD backs out of camp at the last minute. (Don't know if that matters!)

Re: DLH concierge or GC theme park view?

We have yet to do concierge yet at any of the DL hotels. But, I did get to see a park view, at night from one of the hotel suites at the GCH on our last visit. It was spectacular. They had the Mandara Spa temporarly in the suite. The Spa was being rehabed. Now granted this was a suite but, the park view of DCA even from PPH is worth the extra expense. It really is beautiful. The comfort of the rooms at the GCH are worth the extra expense. But, it would also depend on how much you plan to use the concierge services. Isn't concierge something like 150.00 extra a night. I would go for the park view at GCH.

susan,
That's really my question; what do we get for the upgrade to concierge that makes it worth while (keep in mind, please, I'm talk DLH concierge vs GC park view. It's so not in the cards to pay GC concierge!!) We had GC park view last summer and it was wonderful! Are the amenities at the DLH concierge level better than the view of DCA? Sitting there in the morning was magic!! I've just heard so much talk about how great concierge level is that I have to ask! I really want this trip to be special!

Re: DLH concierge or GC theme park view?

Amy, we're staying concierge for two nights at the Disneyland Hotel. We won't be back until early May, but if you can wait that long, I can certainly fill you in on what it's like and what you get for your money. (fortunately we're staying on our DVC points )

Re: DLH concierge or GC theme park view?

Cheryl,
I think I will wait till you and Mark get back to make the final decision. I'm having such a hard time deciding which way to go, I could really use the first hand knowledge. The Grand Californian was pefect for us last summer because we had such a large group (3 kids under 8 & 4 adults), but Harry and I have always loved the DLH (we spent our honeymoon there.) I think it will be easier to switch GC theme park to DLH concierge, if we decide to go that way.
I'll be really happy to get your opinion.

Re: DLH concierge or GC theme park view?

You get access to the concierge lounge, which is located in the Sierra Tower. So, if you are staying in the other towers you have to walk over to the Sierra, you get my meaning. You get the continental breakfast, snacks stuff in the afternoon and evening I believe with wine and cheese. You also get access to sodas and water all day and evening. I think there is turn down service. I think they also have what they call special service like help with making reservations etc. You get priorety check in. Like I said if you have a few people in your party, as far as the food is concerned it might be worth it. Here's the question I would ask. Are you going to want to spend 150.00 on just eating concierge food? Because to me that is what it seems you are really spending that money on.

How much more was it to get a park view room at the GCH? Is it less or more then concierge at the DLH? Again I think I would rather spend the extra money on the view but, that is just me. I also want to hear what Cheryl thinks about her concierge stay at the DLH.

Re: DLH concierge or GC theme park view?

Personally, I'd opt for the concierge room at DLH, not just for the extra services and free food and drinks but the concierge lounge apparently has a great view of the fireworks and I think they even pipe in the musical soundtrack. I love the idea of being able to sit back in comfort and watch the fireworks while enjoying a drink and a bite to eat.

That's exactly what we're planning to do on one of the two nights we're staying concierge. I can't wait!

I can't wait to hear what you think of this. It's the main reason I'm considering making the change. I would love to hear from anyone who has seen the fireworks from DLH concierge.

Re: DLH concierge or GC theme park view?

Zack and I saw fireworks from the concierge lounge, and they were truly spectacular (and this was before the Remember fireworks too.) Zack enjoyed some hot chocolate and cookies while I tucked into a wonderful glass of wine. It was, by far, the best fireworks experience I've had.

I've never stayed at any of the WDW hotels in concierge for comparison, but we absolutely loved our experience at the Disneyland Hotel. The selection of food and beverages all day was excellent. Starting out each morning with breakfast in the lounge, with it's incredible views of the entire resort area was lovely. We were lucky, I guess, to be in the Sierra tower, very close to the lounge. But, I'd see if you could request that. I've never had the theme park view at the Grand Californian, but we have had the Downtown Disney view. I would choose concierge at the Disneyland Hotel over this room at the GC every time. Either way though, sounds like you can't go too far wrong!
